Today we’d like to introduce you to Howard Kurtzman.
Hi Howard, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
I began painting in 1986, and I have painted almost daily ever since. Acrylic on canvas is what I enjoyed the most, so I’ve continued with that medium creating fine art in a style that seemed to flow from my head to my hand almost immediately. A few years ago, I was asked to paint a mural in spite of my inexperience. As a self-taught artist, I’ve been learning what works best to cover walls, ceilings, and various textures. I’m not comfortable calling myself a muralist, but I’ve now completed several murals, so maybe I am a muralist.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My art career has been the opposite of smooth. I’ve been rejected more times than I could possibly count. I have a style and a look about my art that may not appeal to a mass audience. I love the art that I create, so I believe that’s all that really matters. I have a niche market, and I’m okay with that!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My artwork is a blend of pop, fine, contemporary, geometric, abstract. I’m not sure what category I would use as a label. I hand mix every color on every canvas. Mixing paint and my use of color, I believe are what makes my paintings special and unique. I’m most proud of my dedication to my passion, my drive, enthusiasm, consistency, and my conviction to paint from my heart and not for what sells and is popular at the moment. I’m inspired by my life experiences; therefore, my paintings are my stories, my diary, my truth. Mine, original, me.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Hahaha. Nothing works well for me. No mentor, and my networking skills are non-existent. I’m fortunate to have wonderful circles of friends, and they have been the foundation for me to sell my art and have helped to inspire other collectors. My Instagram has been a successful tool for me, but sometimes I must try to break the Internet by posting a torso pic or something salacious in an attempt to garner attention. Whatever works!
