Check Out IQ Jones’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to IQ Jones.

Hi IQ, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started releasing music in 1999 as IQ, 1/2 of female duo Kin4life. I am out of Mt. Vernon, NY but born in the Bronx. I’m an nyc girl so when I was performing in ATL and saw the price of houses were better than ny. Purchased a home here and built my professional studio. I engineer, produce, songwriter and artist. Started my label. Kin Factory Entertainment in 2020. 7 artist on the label and over 2 million streams

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Being a black female in Hip Hop is challenging but this country ain’t nothing but challenges for a Black woman. And I have the nerve to be openly gay. Another struggle is not letting clients brandishing guns book your studio. Yeah we got guns in ny but my atl clients will leave they guns with me when they go in the booth. They should leave it in the car lol

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m originally known for being an emcee. Once I turned my ny home into a studio I never looked back. I purchased my home in Decatur once I knew what room would become the studio. What sets me apart is I’ve always been an artist so I think like that when it comes to my business. I never rush or kick an artist out when they book the studio. I also pay my artist their royalties because I remember what it felt like the first time I got paid. I’m also proud that I invest in talented artists like Only1Theory. I’m here to do all I wish I had. 9 years at the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Education Department taught me all I did for them I should do for me and my community.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Advice is to believe in yourself. Depending on what you hope others will do is foolish. What are you doing today to build what you want. Be sure to continue regardless. I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2021 and I made my studio ADA ready. My client who’s been with me from 2014 said he’s not worried, I’m sitting down most of the time anyway. Don’t let anything or anyone stop you.
