Today we’d like to introduce you to Isaac Hayes.
Hi Isaac, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Brunch With Rosie began when Hunter Price and John Evans met in a music class at Auburn University in 2022. John Evans (bass) was a music major, and Hunter Price (guitar/lead vocal) was an engineering major interested in songwriting. Hunter instantly recognized John’s talent, and it took no time at all for him to pitch the idea of starting a band.
During the summer of 2022, Hunter and John wanted to perform their first show. However, they were missing a drummer. Having met briefly a couple of times earlier in the year, the two contacted drummer Isaac Hayes, who was also a student at Auburn at the time. The band was complete.
Brunch With Rosie had their first rehearsal in late June 2022, and only two days later performed their first show in Hunter’s Auburn apartment to an audience of 20 people. The trio could instantly feel a sense of musical and personal chemistry, and at that moment, they knew they had created something special. Hunter Price’s indie/alternative vocal and guitar stylings, combined with John Evans’ electronic-inspired slap-bass and Isaac Hayes’ jazz/funk drumming, make for a sound that listeners can only describe as “nothing they have ever heard before”.
The band continued to build momentum in the fall. From releasing two singles, “Keep My Head” and “44”, to booking local and regional gigs, Brunch With Rosie was becoming more and more known across Auburn’s DIY music scene. That same fall, John Evans helped co-organize Aubfest, a DIY indie music festival held 10 minutes outside Auburn. Brunch With Rosie performed at that first Aubfest and went on to perform at the next five Aubfests, held twice a year.
Over Brunch With Rosie’s four years as a band, they have released four singles (“Keep My Head”, “44”, “Redder”, and “Trouble”), the “Chasing Shadows” EP, and are set to release new singles this year. The band has performed over 100 shows in Atlanta and surrounding areas, such as Auburn, Opelika, Birmingham, Nashville, Athens, Dahlonega, Columbus, and Huntsville. Brunch With Rosie is now based in Atlanta, Georgia, as they continue to expand their audience and presence in the Atlanta live music scene.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall, I’d say being in the band has been great! The three of us are very “chill” people in general, but also with music. We all try to approach it with “Take what you do seriously, but don’t take yourself too seriously.” Since there are just three of us, it’s always very easy to coordinate rehearsals, gigs and songwriting sessions, as well as simply hanging out. The hardest part in my opinion is booking shows. There is so much talent out there nowadays that venues are easily overwhelmed with the number of bands and artists who reach out. We’ve found that persistence is the key to getting our foot in the door, but once we’re there, making the best impression possible is so important. Not just leaving a good impression with fans, but also with venue staff is crucial. We try to build great relationships with venues so they can trust that we will do a great job every time.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Brunch With Rosie is a three piece band that performs original music. We have covers of well-known tunes that we play occasionally, but our focus is writing and performing original music. I’d say our “claim to fame” is our single “44”. At our live shows, we always end with that song last, and people love it. It has also performed the best out of all our material on streaming, so people recognize it the most.
I can say that as a band, we’re most proud of the memories we have made throughout the years. It’s so easy nowadays to get caught up in the numbers side of things; monthly listeners, Instagram followers, ticket sales, merch sales, etc. These things are definitely important and contribute to a band’s “success”, but for us at the end of the day, we do this because we love it. Getting to write music with your friends, and then perform that music for an audience, is something that we never take for granted. One day, we will not be able to do the band thing (at least, not at the frequency we do it at now), and that’s life! But when that time comes, we can look back and know that we did something that was worthwhile to us and that we can be proud of.
The thing that sets us apart from others the most is definitely our bass player. We always get a lot of good feedback on him 🙂
