Today we’d like to introduce you to Isis Bell.
Hi Isis, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in south Fulton but moved to sandy springs in middle school to better my education. Unfortunately, the schools in the south side are underfunded and offer less opportunity. In Sandy Springs, I received so much opportunity to better my education from the schools I attended. After high school, I went to a performing arts college conservatory in New York. When COVID-19 hit, I was sent home and finished out the rest of my studies online. I have been back in Sandy Springs since then.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Moving back home was not easy. I faced a lot of personal conflicts. I moved out of my family home, struggled with figuring out if who I am is aligned with the person I want to be. For a while, I was so depressed that I was sort of paralyzed. I couldn’t get out of bed or shower, I just had no motivation to do anything. Luckily I have an excellent support system of friends and family that helped me out of it. But for a while, it was a mental battle between me and myself.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am an actress, model, bassist and poet. I specialize in film and television acting. My most proud moment of my acting career thus far has been working on the set of Black Lightning in its final season. Working with Warner bros was such an amazing experience and I look forward to working with them again in the future. In regards to my poetry, I’m most known for a spoken word poem I posted on Instagram and Facebook in 2020 titled ‘anxiety poem’. I wrote the poem when I was about 15 years old. I had a rough childhood that caused me to struggle with anxiety and sometimes the weight of anxiety would be too much to bare and the only way I could really work through it was through my poetry. ‘Anxiety Poem’ was the very first poem I’ve shared as a poet and naturally, I was anxious about sharing it. I put my personal feelings aside to share my work because I felt like it was a very vulnerable thing to do. I believe that in today’s society, we need to have that level of vulnerability with each other to realize that we aren’t as separate as we may seem and in fact, we all struggle with the exact same feelings and emotions though their causes may be different. At the end of the day, we all feel the same. In my opinion, it’s important to keep that sense of unity in mind to maintain a true sense of reality.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Recently I’ve decided to give back to my community by coaching my old high school’s JV volleyball team. I had heard that the school was struggling to find a coach and in fact, they almost didn’t have a JV team until a caring softball coach came in to take on the mantle of volleyball head coach. I heard that she needed help coaching these girls in volleyball and I decided to step in as a community coach to help lead the girls into their season. Volleyball is something I have been passionate about for a long time. I played in high school. Playing volleyball in high school is a core memory for me and has built friendships that I still carry with me to this day. I want to be able to give the JV girls I coached a similar experience to the one I had when I played. I know what it’s like for them, entering high school can be difficult. I know that for a lot of these girls, volleyball is the reason they come to school and is their favorite part of the day. I want to make playing on the team worthwhile for them.
