Today we’d like to introduce you to Jade Boykins.
Hi Jade, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Jade and I’m a graphic designer. I was always interested in art of some form and at some point, I wanted to be an artist. I would literally draw on everything I could get my hands on and that didn’t always go well with my mom growing up, lol but little did I know I’d end up here being a graphic designer years later. During my undergrad years, I was very active on campus, I worked at the newspaper and both radio stations while in college which led me to creating my own graphics for events. I was introduced to Photoshop while I worked at the campus newspaper and I would always be super creative with my page layouts and also with my weekly radio event flyers. Which prompted graphic design inquiries from my classmates who would want me to make graphics for them. I would never do it because I wasn’t really interested in graphics at the time, I would do it because I didn’t have a choice, not because I wanted to.
Over the years, I would still create graphics for the companies I would work for, my YouTube channel, family, and friends because I was getting better at my craft. Then I was fired from my job right before COVID hit, causing me to use my talents as tools for survival. But a year and some change later, SBJ Media is still in business and we don’t plan to stop anytime soon.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road hasn’t been smooth at all. It definitely has had its ups and downs but I feel like that’s how you learn the most valuable lessons. I’m only a year and a half in so I know I still have a long road of learning so mistakes will happen but I’m looking forward to the lessons that’ll come as well. The one thing I learned about this industry is that you will never stop learning or evolving as an artist. I’m actually currently rebranding my business because of some mistakes I made/learned before.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in building high-quality websites and graphics for business owners who want to elevate their brands. I’m most proud of my flyer portfolio, flyers allow me to use my creativity the most. What sets me apart from others is my eye for detail and the way I create color palettes.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
Whew, this is a hard question. I am a “self-help” queen so I only follow self-help pages, motivational pages, etc. I will say the apps I use daily to keep me grounded are The Bible app for time with my creator, The Daily Teaching app for clarity and my notes app to brain dump and jot down different things during the day.
