Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaelyn Swims.
Jaelyn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I moved to Georgia two years ago & that’s when I actually started Jaeestylezzz. I used to do starter locs and retwist dreads back in my hometown. Moving here clientele had gotten slow. People with dreads already had their permanent stylist and very few people wanted starter locs. I sat and told my girlfriend that I wanted to expand because I hated working at Walmart and I really want to do hair full time. So that’s when I started braiding. The first person head I did she gave me $25. The second person I did gave me $70. After that, I started charging $65 for small-sized Knotless braids with hair included. Yes, only $65! I did this until I perfected my skills and this got me where I am today. I am 100% self-taught.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Of course not. I have my slow days. I have multiple days where I am not booked at all then all of a sudden, I get completely booked out of nowhere.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a hairstylist. I can really do it all but I specialize in braids. Apart from braids and locs, I am expanding more over into wig installs. I have a few more things I am perfecting on my own then it will be a completely new service. I am most proud of the fact that I was able to move from my hometown with no family members and come to this big state and have such a big clientele. I have super loyal clients that really do love the work that I do. I wasn’t always a “good child” with a lot of opportunities so to be able to do all of this on my own is major for me.
