Check Out Jahnova Kamil’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jahnova Kamil.

Jahnova Kamil

Hi Jahnova, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I moved to Atlanta at 19 with the interest in becoming a tattoo artist. I worked as an extra curriculum art teacher at a public elementary school and went to the tattoo shop every day after work; religiously on the weekends. My fascination for the craft grew and so did my appreciation for art. I began tattooing in the summer of 2020. Since then, I’ve developed my career as a tattooer and fine artist. If I’m not tattooing I’m creating art or finding inspiration for my work.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t believe the journey of an artist is ever linear. Whether the challenges are personal, financial, familial etc: there is some sort of difficulty along the way. My obstacles are usually dealing with decision making. It’s easy to second guess myself because art is mostly subjective. I’m very hard on myself. If I don’t feel like a tattoo or painting came out to my liking, it can get me down. I’ve also learned to balance my personal life and my work life, even though the two seem to merge together.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a tattooer and a fine artist. Right now, I’m focused on learning the craft of (American) traditional tattooing. This includes a specific style of creating designs and application of tattoos and artwork. I’m known for tattooing funky pieces and creating abstract art. I’m proud of the connections I’ve made so far and the growth I’ve endured in the industry. I believe my authenticity sets me apart from others.

What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I’ve seen tattooing change a lot in the past 5 years. I can only imagine that in the next 5-10 years there will be more use of technology as tools to create pieces. AI has been coming into play in many artistic fields. I can see people generating ideas for tattoos and paintings. There could possibly be a shift in the other direction that inspires people to go back to the traditional ways of creating in their medium.
