Today we’d like to introduce you to James Hartwell.
Hi James, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My story in the hair industry started way before I realized it. Growing up my parents were already in the industry, My mom was a master cosmetologist and my dad was a barber. I first gravitated towards barbering around the 5th grade, So maybe about the age of ten is when I experienced cutting hair for the first time and it was absolutely horrible. I was so eager to learn and ready to just cut hair I would convince all of my friends in my neighborhood that I could get them fresh for school, Fast forward to what I’ve become as a celebrity barber I still have some of the same faces as clients just because I believed in myself and eventually that rubbed off on people to see that I have confidence in my craft.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One thing about starting your own business/brand is that the road is NEVER smooth. Starting out as a barber especially, to gain new clientele is the number one challenge only because people want quality service as well as quality work and with that, comes something we all know, consistency. consistency is key when trying to gain new clientele, if you are consistent with your work and service that will automatically give you the clientele you want. Now as far as the marketing side of it all, visuals can also be challenging I’ve learned. In today’s technology-driven world we use a lot of social media and most of my clientele comes from social media so it’s good to have consistent quality photos and videos of work for your potential clientele to see at all times.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Phat fades is known for literally crafting the most blended fade you’ve ever seen. As I’ve grown in this industry mastering the fade is by far the HARDEST process, There are multiple techniques barbers and stylists use so finding the one that works for you is very important. The thing that sets me aside from most barbers is my service and style. My DELUXE Phat Fade is everything you can ask for when getting a haircut. I change lives by simply using my tools I was gifted. Throughout the process, the client is immediately greeted with a hot towel followed up with great conversation and ends in a new result of confidence. I have a style that others cant copy, I’m young and very well dressed, and the way I carry myself as an individual speaks volumes. Coming where I come from and experiencing some of the things I’ve been through in life its made me into the man I am today and I would defiantly say that plays a role in why I’m picked first out of other barbers.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
I say the most important lesson I’ve learned is to just listen to yourself and follow your gut. Before the pandemic I really contemplated for about a week before deciding to actually quit my jobs at the time, once I stepped out of my shell a little everything really took off me, yes I still did tons of leg work and promotions but its all worth it, hard work really pays off in the long run, ONLY if you put the work in.
