Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamiko Strickland.
Hi Jamiko, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My business started years prior before I formulated it as a business. Being raised by my grandparents after the untimely death of my mother, I struggled with acne from an early age. Being raised by a grandmother born in 1936, natural oils and herbs were used as home remedies for my hair as well as my skin. Oils such as tea tree oil, castor oil, and olive oil have been natural substances used while growing up. On Mother’s Day in 2020 to honor my late mother (Mary) and grandmother (Ida) I created the brand MaryIda Skincare.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road to success is not easy and anything worth having you must work hard for. The business has been a learning experience. I come from a background with a business degree, but when the real world hits, it’s sink or swim. My motto for life has always been, “I refuse to sink”, therefore I have been a student for life. Some of the struggles I have encountered is marketing. Marketing is a beast in its own spectrum, especially now when social media plays a huge role in everything. I have taken courses from email marketing to learning Facebook Automation. I literally learn something new every day, even from other veterans in my field.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I will like the world to know that MaryIda Skincare products are for better hair and skin. Our slogan is “the healthier way to nourish your skin.” If you are battling with dark spots, acne, hyperpigmentation, hair loss, or dryness of the scalp, we have products that are geared to help. We also have skin kits that will help for each skin type such as acne-prone, combination, dry, oily, and even just normal skin (lucky). I am most proud of the growth of our brand and as we grow the more products we are able to produce.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Building relationships through networking opens you up to finding a potential mentor who can help foster your success. I have a few boss friends that help with my success. We bounce ideas, stories, and advice off each other. It is great to have motivated, like-minded, successful women around that help sharpen your skill set. I am grateful for my tribe.
