Check Out Jamila Jackson-Proctor’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamila Jackson-Proctor.

Hi Jamila, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I needed a change but didn’t know what. I was a hairstylist and wanted to be more creative. My daughter played teeball and I ordered some shirts for her first game. The company messed them up. I decided that night to get a Cricut and I made a shirt that night while following YouTube. I realized that this is my creative thing and change. Slowly but surely I began to make more and learn more. I have now began to take customer orders of any size.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road. Learning to use all of the equipment as well as designing. There is always something else to learn. There is also the times when no one is ordering. Learning to promote yourself and be patient is a hard task.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a custom designer for t-shirts, cups, etched glasses, acrylic signage and much more. I am mostly known for my custom t-shirts and etched glasses. I am mostly proud that I stick to being true to myself. While my price is my price, I try not to be unfair with my prices. I also pride myself on the willingness I have to teach and help others. This business is big enough for us all. My creativity sets me apart from others. I make a simple design a fly one with just a little tweaking and flare.

What were you like growing up?
I was an interesting kid. I was very creative but athletic. I played basketball through college but I always had that passion to be free with my hands. My first love was hair. That started in high school and I still dibble and dabble in that world. I had a love for art as well, mostly graffiti. No one knew but tagging was a thing I tried when I was younger. I thought that I could be the Hood Picasso. Funny, I know. I was very interested in anything that allowed me to be me and creative with my hands.
