Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan “JDitto” Minor.
Hi Jonathan “JDitto”, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have always loved music. Growing up in a musical family, my parents were always playing music and singing around the house. I remember listening to Michael Jackson, Outkast, Whitney Houston, and Prince just to name a few. I loved music so much that around 3rd grade I started writing raps and freestyling. I even performed a rap in the school talent show. I moved to Boston from New Jersey in 6th grade. One day, I was freestyling in the lunchroom and an older DJ, (DJ Nicky D), heard me and asked me to rap at a party he was DJing at the school later that week. It was at that gig I fell in love with the spinning and performing at parties. After two years in Boston, my family moved back to New Jersey. After returning to Jersey I was determined to start DJing. That Christmas, I presented a business plan to my parents who invested in me. I started DJing school events and even adult parties. During this time I also got into the studio to learn about producing and even spit a little bit lol. I was immediately hooked on all aspects of the business. I now have a successful DJ business of eight years and counting and I have spent the last few summers working in the music and media business. My Godfather, Tony Gray, a music and radio Titan, saw talent in me very young and started putting me in position to not only know the ins and outs of music, but that of the music business as well. As I write this, I am in Nashville, Tennessee interning at Universal Music Group (UMG).
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I moved around a lot growing up, this not only affected my social life, as I was always the new kid, it made building a new audience harder on my business. It created a new challenge that taught me how to get to know people and never feel out of place. Luckily, the AUC has been showing me love and business hasn’t been too bad.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I live my life by the motto “If you know a little bit about everything, you can talk to anyone about anything, and you never know who you’re going to meet.” and I have lived that throughout my time in the entertainment world. Throughout my 20 years of life, I have made my own music, done standup comedy, interned within entertainment and media, DJ’d, played instruments, consulted, and produced, just to name a few. Now, I like to be valued as someone who anyone who wants to know anything about the business can come too.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
Roll with the punches. You’re going to have setbacks in life and business that will look like hurdles, but you have to use them as life lessons and grow bigger than those mistakes. Some of my biggest W’s have come right after my worst losses.
