Today we’d like to introduce you to Kameron Angel.
Hi Kameron, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always liked taking photos on my phone since high school. It wasn’t until a few years later that I would pick up my first professional camera. Shortly after the pandemic, going into my senior year of college, I bought my first kit. It was a Nikon d3500 with the standard kit lens. Nothing fancy, but enough to start learning the basics. Im a big outdoors person so I was frequently taking it with me on hikes and walks in the park. I started dragging my friends out with me to practice taking pictures of subjects. Looking back at those photos, you can definitely tell I was learning lol. But it was the practice I needed to get to where I am today. A few months later I ended up taking pictures of my fraternity. A few months after that I took pictures at Georgia Southern’s homecoming tailgate (Hail Southern!). And then not too much later, organizations on campus started reaching out to take their annual photos and some of my peers wanted me to take their grad pictures. I think it was around this time that I started trying out new lenses. Spring 2022 I rented a Nikon 85mm lens and that is when I realized what photographers meant when they said the glass (lens) can really make a photo. And that’s when I really fell in love with photography and wanted to learn as much as I could. Once I graduated I moved to Dallas for a couple years where I did some workshops held by local creatives that I can’t thank enough. I also followed some really influential photographers as well like jordanluke, stretchlifevisuals, and jsquared who are always putting people on game and creating amazing work. All in all, it’s the people I’ve met along the way that have gotten me to where I am. Special thanks to my friends though. They have allowed me to practice and hone my craft more than anybody. If you look at my instagram page, you’ll see a lot of the same faces. Don’t know where I’d be without them.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not a smooth road. Like anything, learning a new skill takes time and a lot of trial and error. I think the biggest struggle for me was trying to get a real understanding of the basics of photography and applying it in real time. The exposure triangle took me quite a while to get the hang of. There have also been financial struggles as well. All the hobbies in the world and I picked up one of the more expensive ones. Even with a full-time job, camera gear can make quite a dent. And getting clientele can be a bit of a challenge when there’s so much competition these days. There are a lot of dope photographers in the Atlanta area and it seems like you also have to be a content creator to stay relevant on social media.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a photographer/videographer. More of a photographer, but I’m in the process of learning video and color grading. Im always asked what kind of photography do I specialize in but honestly I don’t think I’ve chosen any set specialty yet. I like doing a little bit of everything as long as it interests me. Lifestyle, portraits, sports, events, etc. I really just liking capturing memories because time moves fast, so it’s always nice to have something to look back on.
I think I’m most proud of my work in other countries. My friends and I travel a lot and it’s really cool to have taken professional photos in places like Tokyo and London. I’m excited for our future generations to see how cool we were. Having something that transcends time is almost any artist’s dream.
