Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathy Des Jardins Cioffi. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Kathy Des Jardins owns and operates KRC Communications, a full-service publications firm in metro Atlanta. For 17 years, she worked as a newspaper reporter, humor columnist and editor in Louisiana, Kentucky, California and Pennsylvania, winning nearly 100 national and state journalism awards. “Mama Tried,” a 2023 Georgia Author of the Year award winner for First Novel, revisits two of her most winning themes: tragicomedy set to classic country music. In addition to appearing in “O, Georgia! A Collection of Georgia’s Newest and Most Promising Writers,” she has written for several national and regional publications, including book features for a metro Atlanta newspaper group and an online news platform. She is a member of the Atlanta Writers Club, past chair and current member of Roswell Reads, and volunteers with A Novel Idea Author Showcase as well as the Atlanta Authors Series. In 2022, she founded Johns Creek’s first book festival, which she is working to expand in 2023.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not a smooth road at all! There are always challenges – from simply finding time to write to more daunting tasks like securing publishing options. My advice is to stay focused, keep chipping away at goals, ask for suggestions and (this is important) follow the best tips you receive. Throw in a ton of patience and perseverance and results WILL follow. Then move on from the fantasy notions you might have imagined for your journey, soak in the sights along the real road called life, and contentment will be your calming companion.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Shortly after moving to Atlanta in 1996, I created KRC Communications and – 27 years later – we’re grateful to still be in the business of producing print publications and graphic design. Whether we’re creating magazines with international impact or grassroots keepsake programs, I’m proud of the work we do. I’m also thrilled to have finally finished my first novel during fits and starts of bits of time stolen from running a business and raising kids. It was a long process that made me more determined to help other writers, which is why I pen monthly book stories for a metro Atlanta newspaper group and volunteer for a variety of author-support organizations.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
A determination to finish what I start, on deadline and to the absolute best of my abilities has been vitally important in everything I do.
