Today we’d like to introduce you to Katie Redmon.
Hi Katie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Before I ever picked up a camera, I spent eight years as an elementary school teacher. I loved every minute of working with curious, energetic little ones in my fourth grade classroom and my STEM specials class. The classroom taught me patience, empathy, and how to create magic and fun through simple moments. I had a true passion for working with elementary aged children and their families and I thought that would be my path for my entire career.
Everything changed for me at the end of 2019 when my first daughter was born. My daughter was born mere weeks before the COVID outbreak began and the world shifted. Suddenly, grandparents and friends could no longer meet my baby and I wanted to find ways to document her in these fleeting months so that I could share her photos with loved ones.
So I picked up a camera for the first time, took photography classes, and never put it back down.
What started as a personal project quickly became a calling. I realized that the same instincts that made me a good teacher with my love for children and their families plus my ability to connect with little ones and make them smile translated beautifully into photography. I wasn’t just taking pictures, but I was telling stories and making beautiful memories for families. These were stories of families in their real, joyful, sometimes messy, but always meaningful seasons of life.
In 2022, shortly after the birth of my second daughter, I stepped out of the classroom and into photography full time. Today, I photograph families in all walks of life all over northeast Georgia, creating images that feel timeless, warm, and deeply personal. I photograph everything from maternity sessions, lifestyle newborn sessions, to milestone sessions, extended family sessions, and more. My sessions are built around connection rather than perfection and they are an opportunity for parents to pause from their daily tasks and slow down and just be with their babies.
At home, I’m a mom to two girls, ages four and six, and I’m married to my high school sweetheart. That season of life shapes everything I create. I understand the chaos and the beauty, the way time moves too fast, and how important it is to hold onto it while you can.
For me, photography is more than a business. It’s a way to serve families, honor their stories, and give them something they can return to long after the little years have passed.
I’ve learned that the moments that feel small now are the ones that become everything later.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Running my own photography business was not a calling that I ever saw myself having when I was younger. My passion was always for the classroom before I had children, so transitioning into family photography and running my own small business was a path I never thought I would take.
I was terrified to leave the security of my education career behind, especially just after obtaining my third college degree in the field. I was worried that I would not be able to find anyone who would trust me to photograph their beautiful moments and I was hesitant that I would no longer be able to provide for my family financially.
This career pivot was a huge leap of faith. I was hoping that I would create timeless memories beautiful enough that families would want to invite me into their biggest moments, and it has ended up being the most rewarding opportunity. Without my husband’s encouragement to jump in with both feet, I would have never been able to turn this dream into reality.
I was so grateful for every family that trusted me with their moments and that they would share my information with their family and friends. I feel so blessed that my business has bloomed as much as it has in the past five years and I am grateful for all of the lessons I’ve learned along the way.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a family and motherhood photographer located near Gwinnett and Hall Counties, and I specialize in capturing connection over perfection. My work focuses on real moments, laughter, snuggles, movement, and the in-between pieces of family life that often end up meaning the most.
I’m known for creating a relaxed, joyful experience where families don’t feel like they have to perform. I guide families throughout their sessions, but I leave room for kids to be kids and for parents to just be present. My style leans timeless, warm, and story-driven, with a mix of close, emotional portraits and pulled-back images that show the full scene of a family together.
What I’m most proud of is the trust my clients place in me. Families invite me into some of their most meaningful seasons, pregnancy, newborn days, first birthdays, and the everyday magic of raising little ones. Knowing that the images I create will be passed down and treasured long after the toys are gone is something I never take lightly.
What sets me apart is my background as a former elementary school teacher and a mom of two young girls. I understand children, I know how to connect with them quickly, and I’m patient in the moments when things don’t go exactly as planned. I don’t just photograph families, I serve them. My goal is always to give them an experience that feels easy and images that they will cherish for decades to come.
How do you think about luck?
I feel like I have been very fortunate with this business. Even at the beginning of my career when I was still learning what my style was and how to create beautiful, consistent portraits that families will cherish, I had families who trusted me with their stories. They gave me the space to make mistakes, learn, and grow into the photographer I am today.
I feel more blessed than lucky that I have been able to make my dreams come true in this business. Running Katie Redmon Photography has given me the freedom to pour into my children during the weekdays, while also serving families and creating memories for them on the weekends and weekday evenings. While I have poured countless hours of hard work into growing my business, I feel like there are way more factors that have contributed to this success than just my work. I am truly grateful for everyone who has trusted me to document life’s most precious moments and for the way that God has provided a path for me in this business.
