Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Evert
Hi Kay, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started by simply looking for any way I could take action to resist something inherently anti-American—a fascist system. I had made a post on TikTok that went viral, leading people to flood the comments with questions. Everyone was looking for the same thing we were: a way to stand up together. Kim, a co-founder of NVU, found herself in the same position I had. That’s when Misty, the other co-founder, stepped in, helping people with the information she found. Instantly, Kim and I realized how we could help—how we could make a true difference. We all started working together to gather and share as much information as possible in the face of severe censorship.
We started on a notepad, then I created our spreadsheet to help us track data more effectively. We decided to share that resource directly with people. We quickly gained traction, with 80 to 100 people viewing it at any given moment. During this time, we had 50,501 protests listed—the only ones that didn’t have a designated organizer. We believed in the movement and thought others should hear about it. After countless messages directing people to find their community and organize, our efforts truly took off.
We continued to stay up to date, carrying out the same mission we always had: to provide a voice for those who felt they had none by showing where community already existed, educating people on how they could create that community, and directly aiding them through it all. We moved to the website you see today to better accomplish this goal. The hard reality is that we have all been made to think we are alone and powerless—but that is nothing but false. The information and guidance we seek to provide have, and will continue to, help people take their first steps into activism. Every day, we build more resources that are otherwise hard to find, closing the perceived gap between individuals and having their voices heard.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
We are building a plane while flying it. Although we have made astounding progress in a very short period of time, there’s always bumps. Especially when our whole organization was made in part to help circumvent a large censorship epidemic. These bumps help us still in seeing where exactly we need to help however. One thing for sure is the mindset to grow and learn here from every experience, small, large, good, bad, it doesn’t matter.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
The largest reason we stick around is seeing every person who they they had no power be moved to act in their own strength. The emails of people telling us how we helped them find out about things they never would’ve found otherwise.
This is how we’re set apart. Were here purely to give a helping hand to those who has a desire to make a difference and no clue how. Even after finding the tools and means to share their work, we continue to help. People will further reach out to aid in their work, which we love to see. We’re always looking for more and better ways to do this too. For example we are building out guides for every state on how to legally create your own protest. While building this were even working on some ways to aid in ever closer ways to those unable to start their own protests themselves.
Unlike most organizations we aren’t here to give people messages to spread, we simply aim to connect and lift others. To create a space where everyone is empowered in their own voice, hear their community speaking up along side them, to be given a seat at the table with everyone else. We aim to create a interconnected system of people that are knowledgeable and willing to act on their educated decisions with likeminded individuals.
What matters most to you?
It’s crucial to what we do to be able to live out the values we show to others in our life first. Every voice is heard. Weather its someone random in our lives, at home, at work, we aim to uplift. Everyone’s voice is to be taken as equal.
