Check Out Ken Freeman’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ken Freeman.

Hi Ken, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Kenari was born from the belief that fashion is more than clothing—it’s identity, empowerment, and integrity woven into every stitch. I started this journey as a healthcare professional, deeply rooted in the precision and care required in open-heart surgery nursing, while nurturing a lifelong love for creative expression through fashion and writing. The idea for Kenari emerged from a desire to merge bold aesthetics with a brand ethos centered on sustainability, cultural engagement, and individuality.

As a Black entrepreneur from a small town, I wanted to build a fashion house that not only disrupted the norm but also inspired inclusivity and excellence. What began as sketches and small concepts grew into a global vision: to create the first major U.S.-born fashion house that stands firmly for ethical practices and artistic innovation. Each collection—from couture lines like Phoenix to hiking-inspired adventure wear—reflects our commitment to quality, storytelling, and a fusion of classic and avant-garde design.

Kenari today is more than a brand; it’s a movement. We produce fashion that’s timeless yet daring, championing both elegance and edge. We’ve navigated trademark battles, international expansion, and countless design evolutions, but the heart of Kenari remains unchanged: to inspire confidence, celebrate culture, and craft pieces that are as intentional as they are beautiful.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been far from smooth—and in many ways, that’s shaped the DNA of Kenari. One of the biggest challenges has been balancing two demanding worlds: the medical field, where I worked as a cardiovascular nurse, and the entrepreneurial journey of building a fashion house from the ground up. Each world required a different kind of precision and resilience, and there were moments when it felt like I was pouring from an empty cup.

Financial barriers and navigating a saturated fashion industry as a Black-owned, U.S.-based luxury brand also brought unique hurdles. From securing ethical suppliers who align with my values to protecting the brand through international trademarking, I’ve faced countless legal, creative, and logistical obstacles.

And perhaps the most personal challenge has been fighting doubt—the internal and external voices questioning whether blending healthcare precision with high fashion was even possible. But every setback reinforced my commitment to create something authentic, bold, and lasting. The obstacles didn’t just shape Kenari—they became part of its fabric.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At Kenari, my work bridges the gap between high fashion and purposeful design. I specialize in creating collections that embody a blend of elegance, boldness, and sustainability, with a focus on couture craftsmanship and adventure-inspired wear. From avant-garde runway pieces to practical luxury essentials, Kenari is known for pushing creative boundaries while remaining grounded in integrity and ethical practices.

What I’m most proud of is how Kenari has carved out a space as a U.S.-born luxury brand that is uncompromising in both quality and values. We don’t just create fashion—we build stories and movements, connecting culture, identity, and empowerment into each collection. Whether it’s a couture velvet suit embroidered with symbols of rebirth or a hiking jacket that marries functionality with sleek aesthetics, every piece reflects deep thought and intention.

What sets us apart is our authenticity. We’re not chasing trends; we’re setting a new standard for what it means to be inclusive, sustainable, and impactful in fashion. Kenari’s designs are wearable works of art that resonate with those who seek individuality and meaning in what they wear.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love most about your city is its creative energy and the strong sense of community. There’s a unique blend of culture, art, and resilience here that constantly inspires me, both personally and professionally. The local support for small businesses and entrepreneurs is also something I deeply appreciate—it fosters innovation and creates opportunities for growth and collaboration.

What I like least would probably be the ongoing challenges around infrastructure and accessibility. While the city has so much potential, there are areas—whether in transportation or public services—that could be improved to make it more inclusive and efficient for everyone who calls it home or visits.
