Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendra Jenkins.
Hi Kendra, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Well, I feel like my story is rather simple.
From a young age, numbers just made sense to me. While others might have found comfort in the arts, sports, or science, I found mine in the clarity of math—the way it offered concrete answers and a sense of order. Aside from the ordinary foundational math courses I completed in school, I also had the opportunity to complete two introductory Accounting classes before heading off to college – and I loved it. But, my path to accounting wasn’t just about this newfound world of formulas and balance sheets. It was first shaped around the dinner table, watching my parents manage bills with care and intention. I was the kid who loved earning chore money, who saved diligently, and who paid close attention to how every dollar was spent. Those early experiences planted the seeds of financial awareness and responsibility.
As I grew older, my love for math continued to evolve into a passion for accounting. I was drawn to its structure, its logic, and its ability to tell the story of a business through numbers. After spending over 25 years in the corporate setting, I realized that what truly lit me up wasn’t just reconciling accounts—it was helping people. I saw how many small business owners were overwhelmed by their finances, unsure of how to make decisions or plan for growth. I understood their anxieties because I’d seen them firsthand, both in my corporate experiences and in my community.
That’s why I founded Simply Figured. Not just to crunch numbers, but to be a partner. A guide. A trusted advisor who could bring clarity where there was confusion, and confidence where there was fear. Simply Figured is rooted in the belief that financial literacy is empowering and that every small business deserves access to tools, insights, and support that help them thrive.
This isn’t just a business for me. It’s a calling. And every client I serve is a reminder of why I chose this path: to make a difference, one decision—and one relationship—at a time.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting Simply Figured wasn’t a decision I made lightly. Loving numbers is one thing, but deciding to build a business around them is another. The leap from corporate comfort to entrepreneurship came with its own set of fears. There’s a quiet vulnerability in saying, “I believe in this enough to build it from scratch.” I had to confront the uncertainty of income, the weight of responsibility, and the voice in my head that asked, “What if it doesn’t work?”
But beneath that fear was a deeper conviction: I knew small businesses needed someone who could translate financial complexity into clarity. Someone who didn’t just manage books, but helped owners feel seen, supported, and empowered. That belief, and the unwavering support from my parents, became my anchor.
Establishing Simply Figured meant more than setting up systems and services. It meant building trust. And, as we all know, trust isn’t given, it’s earned and can be devasting to lose. I have to show up consistently, listen deeply, and prove that I am not just another accountant—I am a partner. I’ve learned that trust is built in the small moments like the follow-up email, the patient explanation, or the celebration of a client’s win. It’s built when people feel safe enough to say, “I’m overwhelmed,” and know they won’t be judged.
Entrepreneurship has stretched me in ways I never expected. It’s taught me resilience, empathy, and the power of showing up with both expertise and heart. Simply Figured is more than a firm—it’s a reflection of everything I believe about business, relationships, and the kind of impact I want to make. I have also been fortunate enough to encounter some amazing partners who have been willing to invest in my dream and motivate me while on this wonderful journey.
So, the road has definitely not been smooth, but what I love about this thing called life is that there are definitely signs to let you know you are moving in the right direction and I’m here for it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
At Simply Figured, we take pride in being more than just a bookkeeping service. We are the back-office backbone for small businesses who need clarity, consistency, and confidence in their financial operations. We assume the administrative duties that often weigh business owners down: managing payroll, tracking expenses, organizing financial records, and delivering clear, timely financial reports. But our work doesn’t stop at the numbers.
We believe financial data should drive decisions. That’s why we go further—translating financial results into actionable strategies that help our clients grow, pivot, and thrive. Whether it’s identifying cost-saving opportunities, improving cash flow, or setting realistic growth targets, we turn insights into impact.
Our specialty lies in helping small businesses get started on the right path, or, on occasion, guiding them out of the chaos that comes from trying to do it all alone. We have proudly served companies across several industries including retail, restoration and remediation services, construction and real estate, and dentistry. Each industry brings its own challenges, and we tailor our approach to meet those unique needs.
What truly sets Simply Figured apart is our unwavering commitment to personalized service. We’re not just crunching numbers—we’re building relationships. Our clients trust us with their dreams, their livelihoods, and we never take that lightly. We know what that trust feels like, and we honor it with every report, every recommendation, and every conversation.
At our core, we’re driven by a genuine desire to see our clients succeed. As our name suggests, we’re here to simplify the complex, to make business decisions easier, and to help entrepreneurs focus on what they do best—while we handle the rest. For us, it’s simply figured.
How do you think about luck?
Respectfully, I don’t believe luck played a role in my journey. However, what I do believe is that every position I’ve held, every challenge I’ve faced, and every lesson I’ve learned has been part of a deliberate path toward entrepreneurship. Each experience sharpened my skills and deepened my understanding, allowing me to be intentional and empathetic in how I serve my clients. I’ve learned to view disappointments not as setbacks, but as stepping stones—each one guiding me toward a brighter, more purposeful day.
