Today we’d like to introduce you to Kocaine Kay.
Hi Kocaine Kay, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m from Elizabeth City, North Carolina a small town called Newland. The population is small and the resources are limited, so you have to really go out get the recognition. I started doing music at 10 or 11 just writing and performing to myself and a few others from the neighborhood that also had the love for music. It wasn’t til I turn like 16 where I knew I could really see myself doing it forever. I had become better with my skills and even had people burning my music on CDs. I am an independent artist so I have to do a lot of my own researching, but I get to work at my own pace and still do what I love without no one on my back.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s always obstacles when you are independent because no one is going to back you until they see you backing yourself. It’s different with being Major because the label is going to push to get that money. Independent you get to be your own boss, but if you fail or can’t get the shows, radio play, or all that come with being noticed you are back to the drawing board. It’s just your budget and your team of people going hard til you’re independent living like the majors.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am an Artist; I write my own lyrics. I also engineer my own music. I mix and master it and from time to time, I make my own beats. Producing is a skill of mine as well but most of the time I have other producers I work with for my sound. Another thing is shoot music videos and edit them. I try and learn to do a lot of things myself to eliminate waiting on others when you don’t have to.
That’s one thing I’m proud of that I really don’t have to bother anyone to get my music done. I can easy just zone out and make my own everything from beats to lyrics to recording and finalizing, even filming my on videos.
What sets me apart from others is I do me and never worry bout another artist’s sound or style. I stay in my own world and create my own waves.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Success to me is when I don’t have to do anything but focus on my music and family. I know I made it when all the work I put in is noticed, no more living check to check no more distractions from anything that’s stopping you from becoming successful. I just want to spend 24 hours in a day living my dreams instead of having to be all over the place and not focused and giving my all on my craft.
