Today we’d like to introduce you to Lagos Girls. Them and their team share their story with us below:
This is actually a unique story because Lagos Girls was established prior to the current Lagos Girls that you’re going to be introduced to today. Lagos Girls is a Nigerian female organization based in New York, New York; that was made with Lagos Boys who is also based in NY. Why the name Lagos Girls? Well, because the original LGs were born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria along with the Lagos Boys. So the name actually represented where they came from. Now the current Lagos Girls are from all over Nigeria. Cynthia, who is the org’s founding manager wanted to build a group of female entrepreneurs that wanted to be in a sisterhood that not only empowers other African women but women throughout the Afro-diaspora. That’s when she went to one of the founders of Lagos Boys, Adetomiwa, and explained to him her vision. That’s when he gave her the opportunity to manage Lagos Girls after LG was seeking reinvention. That’s how the current LGs, Cynthia (Edo), Chigozie (Igbo), Bimbola (Yoruba) and Nikky (Yoruba) came about. We are Nigerian female influencers and entrepreneurs in the entertainment business; whom focus is on making business ventures, networking & expanding beyond measures. Our vision is to do that all while empowering and supporting one another and those around us whose in need of sisterly uplifting.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it hasn’t there were some bumps here and there, but that’s what any newly branded female organization would face in order to be taken seriously and show that we’re here to make a statement. Honestly, the most struggles we faced were getting acknowledgment and recognization by other orgs in the entertainment industry. Especially when the majority of the orgs are run by men. Getting DJs to work with you on events and getting sponsorships was definitely one of the most time patient things we had to do as a team. All while trying to keep the team tight and strong and focused on the end goal that we all started with.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
To Bring forth a new & improved look on women in the African community by trying to bring different sectors of the NY and NJ together. Hopefully, with time we can widen our horizons to the Western, Southern side of the country. Give back to our homeland with charity events, network and broaden the scope of the brand within the Afro community by collaborating with different women ran orgs
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Have a solid structure, have a good team, a good support system around you for whatever it is that you’re trying to do. But also be able to believe in yourself before anyone else can believe in you. Keep your eye on the end goal and never forget why you started up the business initially.
