Today we’d like to introduce you to Leo Guignard
Hi Leo, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m a Hungarian/Swiss 17 year old VJ and VFX artist who moved to Atlanta in 2023. I began concert visuals as a passion project after witnessing the amazing visuals at different music festivals and concerts around the world. I used skills learnt from different design and visual arts classes to take it upon myself to learn digital art in the context of concert visuals and musical visuals. I focus on live concert settings (often with projections on a screen or led walls) playing together with artists as well as creating music videos. My musical background also inspired me to combine these two artforms. Atlanta has given me room to make amazing connections and meet artists in the field.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The greatest challenge about my art is making connections, especially since I am 17. Not being able to go to clubs and musical venues myself are a difficulty. Working in the niche business of VJing is challenging, as the demand is not always high. Being new to Atlanta has also been difficult, finding the right art community takes time. Since I mainly work on visuals alone, having time while being a student has been difficult but my passion for the art from pushes me through and keeps me motivated.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
According to the main definition, VJs are working visual artists who create, curate, and improvise videos for live events and performances—particularly those that involve music in some way.
Although VJing is what I specialize in, I love anything to do with creating video art. This includes viral analog glitch art videos, popular on Instagram and tiktok as well as creating music videos with artists and working with the artist to create bizarre and abstract videos. I use many different software such as Resolume (the industry standard for composing and playing live visuals), Blender (A free 3D modeling software with amazing animation capability), Touch Designer (node-based visual programming language for real-time interactive multimedia content.), and finally Basic video editors such as Adobe After Affects, Premier pro and DaVinchi Resolve. A huge part of my work is experimentation and trying new things and compiling lost media content. Like DJing finding or producing all of your content can be very time consuming so many people like to use sources such as the Internet Archive to find crazy copyright free content that can be used for creative purposes. All of my content gets posted on Instagram and I am currently working on setting up my own website portfolio.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
To me, having motivation and genuine love for what you do is key to succeeding in the creative business. The entry investment is high and you never really know how much money can come out of it. The fulfillment lies in the creation itself rather than in the compensation. I treat my business as a hobby or something I do in my free time. Being self-taught requires discipline, however I build on my passion and an art that I believe in.
