Today we’d like to introduce you to Lonny P.
Hi Lonny, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I have been doing music and rapping since I was probably in elementary, maybe 7 or 8 years old. In middle school, I was in the fine arts magnet program, where I majored in music. I played trombone and piano. I was in a concert and jazz band. I won many awards, including being the most improved band member, as I went from beginning band skipped straight to the advanced band. Later in high school, I was a part of my school’s marching band, where I too played trombone. I was offered band scholarships by several colleges. Also, in high school, I was a part of a rap group, the only female member. My mom was strict so I didn’t truly get to dive all the way into my rap career as I wanted to. After attending college at Florida A&M University (FAMU), I moved to Atlanta, GA in 2017. In 2021, I finally started taking my rap career seriously and have been gaining lots of success since.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It was definitely not always a smooth road for me. I had to overcome some fear. For the longest, I was scared of what others would think of my music, if they would like it if I’m even good. But I had to tell myself that I would never know until I tried. I started by making small raps and posting them on Instagram and was gaining lots of recognition. I then entered into this competition with maybe 100 other artists and made it to the final round as one of the top 5 best artists. There were artists all over the US in the competition and to make the top 5 says a lot. We were judged by A&Rs, producers, engineers and a few other music execs in the industry. But those things helped me get out of my head to hear people not close to me tell me I’m good definitely built my momentum and courage up to be where I am today.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a rapper. I’m most proud of not giving up. I have some amazing features on the way. I have been blessed to meet some top music execs in the industry. I have been in rooms with major people. I think my determination and efforts set me aside from everyone. I also feel like I have a different sound than other female artists.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I learned to save money and to stay focused no matter what life throws at you. Through hardships, get creative. Life is about problems and solutions, no need to stay stagnant in the negative. Always have a rainy day fund because you never know what situation you could end up in.
