Today, we’d like to introduce you to Mahogany Raspberry.
Hi Mahogany, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today.
As a little girl with a vibrant personality, growing up in the small town of Mobile, Alabama, was challenging. From the tender age of 4, it was evident that the city could not cater to my immense talents. My first glimpse of passion ignited in the church choir, where intricate solos emanated from my small frame, leaving everyone in awe of the special gift I was destined to share with the world.
Music quickly became my first love. I spent the majority of my teen and young adult years convinced that music was my calling. Eventually, I landed a gig as the background singer in a blues band. However, the long hours and modest pay made me yearn for more, pushing me to broaden my horizons. Armed with a prayer, my mother’s unwavering support, $300, and my two children, aged 8 and 12, in tow, I moved to Atlanta to chase a dream.
Pursuing music in Atlanta proved more challenging than I had anticipated, leading me into the modeling industry quite by chance. I soon found myself overbooked with runway shows, but the relentless demands of an industry I lacked passion for began to wear on me. It was through networking and various connections that I stumbled upon an unexpected opportunity — hosting a radio show.
This new venture captivated me entirely, and I fell head over heels for it. This newfound opportunity opened the door to the world of stage plays, marking another pivotal chapter in my journey. However, after a period immersed in the theater, I began to find myself typecast, leading to a crucial realization: I needed to create customized material that truly reflected my voice. Thus, the first of my characters was born.
I began filming sketches featuring Auntie Bertha and Sylvanna Simone, the sex therapist. They were even featured on my radio show. I generated a thirst for deeper exploration in the performing arts. It was during this creative renaissance that I understood that although music was my first love, acting had become my true passion. I dedicated myself to writing monologues, shorts, and feature scripts with a clear vision in my mind: to eventually own a production company, Mr. 22 Productions.
I aim to capture the raw authenticity of real-life experiences in my work, weaving storytelling that resonates across all walks of life. My aspiration is to bring that magic both in front of and behind the camera, crafting content that is not only relatable but deeply meaningful. My motivation has never been the pursuit of awards; instead, I am driven by a profound love for the art itself.
Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
Pursuing an entertainment career in a bustling city as a single mother with two small children was fraught with difficulties. I encountered theft, betrayal by envious friends, and deceit from individuals impersonating industry professionals. From falling prey to notorious scammers to forming connections with those harboring hidden agendas, I found myself engulfed in doubt, debt, and overwhelming demands on my time.
Financing an acting career is a costly endeavor. Without external financial support, managing a budget proved even more challenging than I anticipated, especially as a single mother of a child with special needs. Despite these hurdles, I swiftly navigated through these challenges, finding my own unique pathway to realize and manifest my art.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Nothing could have prepared me for the myriad twists and turns on the path to establishing a successful acting career. It was when I embraced the art of expression through acting that I ignited a passion within me, unveiling a whole new realm of possibilities. Discovering my comedic flair, I began to showcase my versatility through a range of accents.
Auntie Bertha’s rich southern drawl and Sylvanna, the flirty sex therapist’s witty punchlines, caught the attention of numerous producers, directors, and casting agents. They recognized the potential to bring these characters to the forefront, both on stage and on camera. The joy of breathing life into them was unparalleled. Known for my sharp wit while in character, their unpredictable quips became a signature of my performances.
My approach made these characters feel like old friends to the audience, a trait I take great pride in. My primary goal has always been to create content with which people can identify. This vision came to fruition in my collaboration with Taylor 1 Films on the production ‘In A Split Second’. It stands as one of my most treasured achievements.
Any big plans?
I envision a future brimming with boundless opportunities to present the world with stories that mirror the multifaceted nature of life—its tragedies, dramas, triumphs, celebrations, and invaluable lessons. My ambition is to spotlight narratives that resonate deeply with people, showcasing the tenacity, resilience, and perseverance of the human spirit on a global scale.
I am committed to crafting characters, storylines, and sketch comedies that captivate and entertain audiences from all walks of life, continuing to explore the rich tapestry of human experience through my art. Reinventing myself at every turn, I am filled with anticipation for where this acting journey will lead.
There’s no genre I wish to leave unexplored, from high-octane action and heartwarming comedy to the mind-bending thrillers I adore. I am eager to witness the evolution of my contributions to the industry and the unique imprint I will leave behind.
