Today we’d like to introduce you to Malcolm Turpin.
Hi Malcolm, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I would like to candidly say that I started by doing. The sooner I realized no one person would help me in as great a magnitude as I can help myself, the sooner I was able to begin my small yet expanding business. Self-doubt sunk in the moments I pondered my wants and the unknown possibilities of what could happen… and what could slip thru my fingers. I had to foresee a lot to know the direction Graffiti Class LLC would be heading. I believe the right way to start a business is to start a business, no matter your resources, your nervousness and/or anxiety. I set in motion my plans and desires with an uncertainty of what the day(s) after would cascade into and began appreciating the evolving process of creating what I want to see. From teaching public/private classes on Atlanta’s Beltline to body painting amidst one of the biggest cultural festivals of the year and more. There is a variety of things I have had the pleasure of creating and moments I am grateful to have experienced all because I chose to create a starting line for myself. It was about progressing from where I was even when I thought I had nothing and figuring things out from there. Most days, I still must “figure things out”, it is a part of being an entrepreneur! As consistency sharpens my skill(s), I learn what tools complement my unique process(es) and find passion in the things that are easily unexplainable. The increase of my impact and visibility to all who admire art is the true reward and I look forward to reaching a more diverse spectrum of consumers to share my creations.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Even though the journey thus far has been enjoyable… I have had struggles along the way. It is not a smooth road when you are in between a rock and a hard place with your own creativity, mental and emotional processing even. The personal battle with self can easily be a steep uphill climb when the balance of time and task management are miscalculated, causing a spiral of unwanted events. Keeping “job” and “business” separate was a challenging task in the beginning — I want to continue prospering in both areas until my business is my focus. Obtaining and practicing a balance of energy and time management that works best for me is significant in the steps I am taking to establish myself as a successful and sustained business owner. If that means being uncomfortable and choosing value over other things easily glorified, I am willing to stand in that process and come out better on the other side. Becoming familiar with the best method to transfer my art into tangible prints, solicitation and vending was not reasonable for me — I find value in art authentically resonating with consumers and allowing my creations to speak for themselves. You would be surprised the creations that are born from situations of struggles, stresses, or mere moments of creative desperation.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Authenticity and balance play a key role in my success! My art flows freely and resonates with me in a therapeutic manner, so I find gratification in being. Pursuing balance for self-growth within the realm of well-being makes it even more enjoyable to listen to my intuition, maintaining the flow of my subconsciousness through my creative expression. My inner resonance will display itself in ways that are unexplained — I can only hope that it rings as a conversation starter in the eyes of the beholder.
