Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcia May.
Hi Marcia, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I began my career directly out of Design School, in kitchen design/cabinet sales, with a cabinet shop located on Miami Circle in Buckhead. A few years into that job, a cabinet/kitchen design client asked if I could do a few structural changes and install tile. I never thought about it before, but I told her “YES” and literally went home and thought it through and completed the job for her with my handyman that did work around my house. That ONE challenge from a client inspired me to start M2 Renovations. I built a team of 21 gentlemen that are handpicked for their excellent workmanship. We began as bathroom and kitchen remodeling and grew into full house renovations, additions, basement build-outs and layout/floorplan design services, including electrical and plumbing to code drawings. My business more than doubled within two years working primarily in the Tri Cities area and Atlanta historic home neighborhoods such as Grant Park, Inman Park and Ormewood Park.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I presume any business has struggles along the way. However, I like to look at the good side of things so the good far outweighs the struggles of trying to find just the right gentlemen to add due to growth, Growing pains take time to figure out, even now I’m adding to the team for Project Managers and office help as we continue to grow in our tenth year in business.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
M2 Renovations specializes in historic home restorations, that’s where our heart is. I live in a 1934 Bungalow in East Point and I cannot ever imagine leaving it, it’s deep in my heart and soul. Likewise, I enjoy work on older homes and restoring them properly with the right materials. I am on jobsites regularly checking in with the guys and making sure my clients are getting exactly what they want through constant communication.
As a woman owner and designer, I don’t rush things. I want to be known for giving clients what they want not what I want and not being unavailable. Those are the important things in business. I work for my client and am very available for them to talk to about their project. In turn my team is very responsive and cooperative to what the client and I want for each project.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
My Dad paid for my brother and sisters education because they went to the college of his choice. I did not, I knew I wanted a design degree, so he opted not to pay for that. That was certainly his prerogative I continued my daytime office job and took night classes to get my design degree which I provided for myself. It just made me stronger.
