Today we’d like to introduce you to Mason Embers.
Hi Mason, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have always been attached to music in some form or fashion since I was a small child. There are videos of me wearing sunglasses and mashing a toy keyboard along to Stevie Wonder. Music stayed a distant interest for me until a summer morning right before my thirteenth birthday, when I woke up and decided to learn guitar on a whim. I wrote my first song a couple of weeks into lessons which is what really got the snowball rolling. Many songs written later, a concept album released, and over a hundred solo gigs under my belt, here we are. I’ve got a lot in the oven right now.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Most of my struggles have had to do with mentality (other than some bouts of muscle tension dysphonia). Finding motivation, procrastinating, analysis paralysis, wondering where I will fit in between art and industry, a lot of that kind of stuff. Being an answers-needed kind of person while simultaneously being an artist can be strange because there are no clear pathways. You have to be a forager and explorer and really ambitious about it. I’m really ambitious in ideas, but less in execution, admittedly. I’m taking this time in my life to build up confidence before taking the dive. I know I’ll take it, though. I don’t think I’d forgive myself if I don’t…
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I think of myself as a writer before anything else. I specialize in sappy stuff. I like to think of it as court reporting. All I do is see and hear what’s going on, take it in, and put it back out in a way that can be read. I like that description. I’m proud of some of the songs I’ve got, some of my poems, and those are what I intend to put out next. This might be a cliche answer, but I think what sets me apart is that I’m me. That actually makes me a bad court reporter, because I like to replace some words and add others here and there. I trust that my natural interpretations will set me apart enough, you know? I advocate for saying and doing what you mean, and that should bring out a unique style eventually. I honestly couldn’t even tell you what my style is, so I suppose that is for everyone to make up their own answers for if they so choose!
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Integrity, definitely. I value integrity more and more as I get older. I think it is the most integral factor regarding success. I take success to mean feeling fulfilled by your own standards, not anyone else’s. If you stay honest with yourself and others, you’ll probably have lower chances of ending up in bad predicaments and crises… however, the other half of the pie is being able to recognize when others don’t have integrity. You could have all the integrity in the world but still be dragged down if you aren’t associating with good people. That’s equally as important to me. You have to keep yourself in check and check for good people. That’s who I do all of this for; myself and the good people in the world.
