Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Williamson.
Hi Megan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my professional dance company out of both passion and necessity. After years of training in North Atlanta and performing, I settled down and started a family in my hometown and quickly realized I wasn’t done dancing. Due to the needs of family commuting to and from north atlanta was not an option. I wasn’t sure what to do until I realized something was missing in my hometown— there was no professional dance company in the area. Opportunities for dancers were limited, and audiences had few chances to experience high-quality, original performances. Rather than accept the gap, I decided to fill it. What began as a vision quickly grew into a mission: to create a space where dancers could thrive professionally and where the community could connect with the power of live dance. My company was born from that spark — a blend of artistry, community, and the drive to make something that didn’t yet exist.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
For the most part it has been a dream come true but probably the biggest hiccup is funding. Paying from costumes, props, rehearsal space, performance space, and all of the professional dancers has been no easy task.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have been dancing for 24 years with experience in choreographing, teaching and performing in professional shows. Burlap Sakk Dance Company has successfully put on 5 professional shows since 2022. I am most proud of the bond we have as a dance company. We are truly a family and one of the only dance companies I’ve know to have all but one (due to that company member moving away) stay with the company since the very first show. What sets our shows apart I believe is the story telling. Each of our shows is an immersive story telling work of art.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
The company is a family run company. My sister (Molly Ross) is a co-choreographer, dances in the shows, and takes turns directing shows. My brother (Mitchell Morgan) does music, light, sound, photography, and dances in all the shows. My mother (Corey Morgan) helps with costumes and organizing funding. My dad (Raymond Morgan) is a huge sponsor and supporter and helps with building props for my shows. My sister in law (Stokley Morgan) (married to the brother above) is a lead dancer in all of our shows. My husband (Jacob Williamson) is an amazing supporter and helps build props for my shows. Myself (Megan Williamson) chronographs, cuts music, dances in the shows, directs everything, does the social media, makes the website and merch, does the photography, and so much more. Without these people I wouldn’t be able to do what I do.
