Today we’d like to introduce you to Melody Felix-Prieto.
Hi Melody , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started writing when I was ten as a form of escapism. It was a way to create space where I had control, where things made more sense than they did in real life. I never aspired to be an author. I always wanted to be a filmmaker. I went to film school with that goal in mind, but even then, it was always the storytelling that pulled me in. I started writing seriously because I wanted to get better. Writing has been a deeply therapeutic experience. It’s how I process things I could never say when I was young. It’s how I deal with emotions I didn’t know how to name at the time. Over the years, writing stopped being just an outlet and became something much bigger. It became a way of making sense of myself and the world around me.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. If anything, it’s been an emotional rollercoaster. Navigating through self-doubt, life, motherhood, unpredictable schedules, work, and the mental weight of it all hasn’t been easy. There are stretches where the writing flows, and then there are long silences where I question everything. Balancing creative work with the responsibilities of everyday life has been one of the hardest parts. There’s guilt, exhaustion, and that constant push and pull between showing up for others and trying to show up for yourself. But even in the most chaotic moments, I’ve kept coming back to the page. Writing has been the one place where I can be fully honest, even when the rest of my life feels like it’s moving in a dozen directions.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I write fiction, and right now I’m finishing up a YA series called The Tragic + Divine. It follows Alexis, a 17-year-old girl who’s determined to stay far away from angels, until her sister goes missing, and she’s forced into their world. What she finds is dark, seductive, and dangerous. With Milo, a dark angel she can’t trust but can’t seem to stay away from, Alexis starts uncovering deadly truths the angels are hiding. I also do other creative work, like videography and photography, but this series has been one of my biggest accomplishments. It took me five years to write the first book because I had no clue what I was doing. I had to figure it out as I went. I’m most proud of the fact that I didn’t quit. There were so many points where it would’ve been easier to walk away, to say it wasn’t working. But I kept showing up to the work even when no one was asking for it.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love most about Atlanta is how diverse it is. There’s so much culture, so many different communities, and it’s constantly evolving. I’ve loved watching the film industry grow here too. It’s created opportunities that didn’t exist before and brought a creative energy to the city that feels exciting. But I hate the traffic. It makes even the simplest plans feel exhausting. Some days it feels like you spend more time in your car than actually living. Thankfully, I live in North Georgia, so I don’t really have to deal with the traffic.
