Check Out Mersedeh Motahari’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mersedeh Motahari

Hi Mersedeh, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Iran—proudly a Persian girl! Like everyone, I’ve experienced both bitter and sweet moments in my life, but the ups and downs have only made me stronger and more powerful. Every time I broke down, I gathered the broken pieces, stood up taller, and never gave up.

For over ten years, I worked as a fashion designer in my homeland and established my own brand, M E R S E D E H COLLECTION. In a short time, I gained popularity and success, even having the opportunity to export my designs internationally. Through relentless hard work, I built my own business and loyal clientele. However, due to certain difficulties and limitations in my country, I was forced to stop working despite my deep passion for fashion. Eventually, I made the life-changing decision to move to America completely.

That transition was incredibly difficult—I felt lost and depressed, leaving behind my career, my language, my family and friends, and my devoted clients.

In 2015, after moving to California, I picked up photography, but I didn’t take it seriously at first. However, in 2018, when I moved to Atlanta, Georgia, I made the decision to pursue it professionally and turn it into a business that would give me the freedom to travel anywhere. Life had taught me not to rely on a single location or other people—I had only myself to count on for success, and that was my secret to moving forward.

Back in Iran, I always hired an exceptionally talented photographer for my fashion shows and designs. He was the one who guided me in purchasing the best high-end camera, lens, flash, and other equipment. I will always appreciate his kindness! When I started, I didn’t even know how to use my gear properly, but I was determined. I taught myself everything through YouTube and social media, practicing every single day.

To build my portfolio, Google Business profile, and Instagram page, I started by offering free shoots. Within just a couple of months, I began getting more and more bookings. To my surprise, my business grew quickly!

Now, nearly three years later, I am proud to say that I was honored with Atlanta’s Best Award for Best Wedding & Event Photographer in both 2023 and 2024. Winning this award has been an incredible validation of my hard work, and I am more motivated than ever to push forward and achieve my biggest dreams.

If there’s one lesson I’ve learned, it’s that a positive mindset can transform even the hardest situations. No matter how tough life gets, keep going. One day, all your dedication and sacrifices will pay off, and you will experience true happiness, success, and pride in yourself.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like any journey toward success, mine has been filled with challenges, sacrifices, and moments of self-doubt.

One of the biggest struggles was leaving behind everything I had built in Iran—my career, my brand, my loyal clients, and, most importantly, my family and friends. Moving to a new country was not just about starting over; it meant rebuilding myself from scratch in an unfamiliar environment, with a different language and culture. That transition was extremely difficult, and there were times when I felt lost and unsure of my path.

Another challenge was breaking into the photography industry with no formal training. I had to teach myself everything—from mastering my camera settings to understanding lighting, composition, and editing. I spent countless hours watching YouTube tutorials, practicing daily, and experimenting with different techniques. In the beginning, I worked for free just to build my portfolio and attract clients. There were moments of frustration, but I knew that success wouldn’t come overnight—I had to earn it.

Additionally, as a female entrepreneur, I faced moments where I had to prove myself even more, especially in an industry dominated by experienced photographers. But I never let doubt or competition discourage me. Instead, I focused on delivering high-quality work and building strong relationships with my clients.

There were financial struggles as well. Investing in professional equipment was expensive, and in the early stages, I wasn’t making much money. But I believed in myself and kept pushing forward, knowing that hard work and persistence would pay off.

Despite all these challenges, I never gave up. Every obstacle made me stronger, more resilient, and more determined to succeed. Now, winning Atlanta’s Best Award for Best Wedding & Event Photographer in both 2023 and 2024 is proof that all the struggles were worth it. Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing because every hardship shaped me into the person and artist I am today.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a professional photographer specializing in wedding and event photography, but my work extends beyond just capturing moments—I aim to tell stories through my lens. My passion lies in creating timeless, emotional, and artistic images that my clients can cherish forever.

What sets me apart is my background in fashion design, which gives me a unique perspective on composition, posing, and styling. Because of my experience in the fashion industry, I pay close attention to details like lighting, angles, and aesthetics, ensuring that every shot looks polished and elegant. I don’t just take pictures—I create visual art that enhances the beauty of the moment.

I am also known for my ability to make clients feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera. Many people feel nervous during photoshoots, but I guide them naturally, helping them relax and bring out their best expressions. My approach is a blend of candid and editorial photography, capturing both authentic emotions and magazine-worthy portraits.

One of the things I am most proud of is winning Atlanta’s Best Award for Best Wedding & Event Photographer in both 2023 and 2024. This recognition is not just an achievement for me, but also a reflection of the trust my clients have in my work. Seeing their joy when they receive their photos is the most rewarding part of what I do.

What truly sets me apart is my resilience and dedication. I built my business from the ground up, teaching myself everything and constantly improving my craft. I don’t just rely on technical skills—I bring passion, creativity, and a deep understanding of storytelling to every shoot. My goal is to not just meet expectations but exceed them, delivering images that my clients will treasure for a lifetime.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I love most about Atlanta is its diversity and energy. The city has such a rich blend of cultures, art, and creativity, which makes it an inspiring place to live and work. As a photographer, I appreciate the variety of stunning locations—whether it’s the beautiful parks, historic landmarks, or modern cityscapes, Atlanta offers incredible backdrops for photoshoots. The people here are also warm, supportive, and open to new ideas, which has helped me grow my business and connect with amazing clients. The opportunities in this city feel endless, and that’s something I truly appreciate.

What I like least? Honestly, the traffic! Getting around can be challenging, especially during peak hours. It sometimes makes scheduling and commuting between shoots a bit stressful. Aside from that, Atlanta’s weather can be unpredictable—one moment it’s sunny, the next it’s pouring rain, which can make outdoor shoots tricky. But overall, the positives far outweigh the negatives, and I’m grateful to call this city my home.
