Today we’d like to introduce you to Mia Taylor.
Hi Mia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve always been in love with photography, fashion, and writing since middle school. I started blogging in 2008 as a college sophomore. I had dreams of being a reknown fashion journalist for Suede Magazine or Harper’s Bazaar. I wanted to show my perspective of being a fat, black girl in fashion. My first blog, Lifestyles of the Broke and Famous, focused on high fashion, but later I created a second blog called Diary of a Fashionista, where I found my niche as a plus size style blogger. I was collaborating with several plus size brands and major retailers to create content on my blog. As Instagram evolved, I saw the shift from blogging to influencing and had to adjust accordingly. Mia The Boss wasn’t just a social media handle, but became my brand.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road to get to where I am now. It took me so many years to be able to quit my job to become a full-time influencer and entrepreneur. While maintaining a full-time job, my struggles were maintaining a two jobs – influencer and day job – and a personal life. It was extremely difficult to work eight hours a day while balancing the demands of being a businesswoman and the many contracted collaborations I had. I would have to find time to create content for collaborations, ship and package orders, have a social life, and be on time for work. In 2018, I quit my job and became an influencer full-time. Some of the not so pretty struggles people don’t see are inconsistent paychecks, out of pocket healthcare expenses, being your own manager to negotiate contracts, and motivating yourself every day to complete content by deadlines.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a style influencer, content creator, digital brand consultant, and online business owner. What sets me apart from others is that I paved my own lane when I began blogging in 2008 and became one of the first plus size bloggers. I consider myself an OG in the blogging/influencing world because I was that girl before both were such a term. I wasn’t the typical plus size blogger then and I’m still not the typical plus size influencer now. I never participated in the over commercialized body positivity movements and didn’t fit the cookie cutter image of a plus size influencer. I enjoy taking fashion risks and showing women who look like me that they can be a boss, ultra feminine, glamorous, sexy, intelligent, and sophisticated all while being well dressed. Through each post, I want women to know size doesn’t define who you are and to just live your life unapologetically you.
Success to me is being able to do what I love for income and making my own rules. Being able to pay my bills every month, live comfortably, travel, and enjoy life’s luxury while being my own boss has always been a dream for me and to be living the dream is surreal.
