Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Nelms.

Hi Michael, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Michael J. Nelms, CEO, Owner of Keep Trucking Transportation, father, and Howard University graduate with a dual degree in psychology and administration of justice. Entering the world of entrepreneurship came with a huge level of responsibility. In 2014 we purchased and rented 12 box trucks during our first year of entering into the trucking industry.

We quickly grew our fleet, Then started focusing on semi trucks, leasing on both owners and owner-operators to our company. We also started dispatching for other carriers. Our early trials and tribulations led us to understand, trucking demands a constant supply of funding, critical thinking, quick decision-making, budgeting and don’t forget mentorship.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The gift and curse of trucking, The curse is trucking is an $800 billion dollar industry that comes with hurdles, valleys, and peaks. There were many setbacks in the early part of our 9 years. Learning how to properly staff our company was one of the most important lessons learned. Also, knowing what to pay our drivers and understanding fuel costs and our company overhead were challenges that we faced.

The gift is our ability to learn, adapt and pivot all while growing from earlier struggles. Learning how to save money when the loads are paying well and the fuel cost is low. Knowing how to properly invest in trucking so that we are prepared when the road gets rough. It was important that we not only learned from our early errors but that we were able to teach others from making those same costly mistakes. After working with Michael, clients learned how to stay in business while pivoting through decreased rates and increased fuel prices. His clients have been offered contracts with direct customers, consistent freight, dedicated lanes, and trailer options. Mike has incorporated transportation management systems to increase productivity and revenue. Michael and his team are known for building strong relationships with business owners and customers to provide quality service and on-time deliveries. In closing, his favorite motto is: “ We find a solution for a problem before it exists.

Through this understanding, we started purchasing trailers and renting them out to carriers in need. We offer a trailer leasing program and created multiple streams of income for our carriers. Keep Trucking Transportation hosted the first annual: Truck Funding Rooftop Mixer. This was a one-of-a-kind trucking event that provided over $1.2 million in funding to help interested candidates start and fund their trucking businesses without using their personal capital. Commercial funding is one of the most challenging obstacles to overcome when starting a business in trucking, so we focused more on being innovative and creating solutions. We have a goal to fund over $2.5 Million at our next event in 2023.
