Today we’d like to introduce you to Monet Mike.
Hi Monet, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been connected to the arts. My parents really made it a priority to provide me with experiences in theatre and music as a child. Building upon that foundation, I entered into film as an actress, believing that that was where I was supposed to be. I later learned that my joy and success would be found as a storyteller. Through my production company, Glory James Productions, I tell untold stories through a lens of glory.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The journey to establishing myself as an independent writer and filmmaker has been full of ups and downs. I wouldn’t necessarily describe them as challenges because each step has been an opportunity of growth and stretching. Each decision and choice has led me to enter into rooms and relationships of true value and substance.
The biggest decision that I’ve had to make as a creative is to trust my vision and voice. Making films is not a solo endeavor. It takes the time, talent and commitment of many others. When I’m meeting with my executive team or working with talent, I’m always listening and processing their feedback. At the same time, I’m trusting myself. This decision isn’t always comfortable but it’s very necessary to ensure that when the film is complete, you’re satisfied.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Earlier this year I began Glory James Productions to breathe fresh air into the film industry, with the mission of telling stories that have yet to be told. Within our first year, I’ve had the privilege to write, produce and direct the pilot of “IN THE VILLAGE”. This led to partnering with an incredible nonprofit, Blended Families Rock, in writing two short films. I later served as Producer on an amazing independent film titled “Bleeched Out”. All of these projects harness strong truths and layered characters.
I am most proud of my ability to build and sustain community. Networking and relationships are at the center of working in the film industry. Each job I’ve gotten has stemmed from the previous one. The best picture to draw would be one of a plant. Each project is literally the seed for the next one. Working in a spirit of excellence is the water and sunlight for growth and access to the next garden.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Taking risk has become somewhat of a norm. There will always be some sort of risk associated with being a creative. The way I process or view something, may not align with the next person. When writing stories, I pause and ask myself, “What type of connections can others make with this story?”. I know that at the end of the day, everyone won’t approve but I still continue to write and tell the story. When I’m building my team or looking for others to collaborate with, there is always the risk or possibility of receiving a no, but I still have to continue forward. Life is risky business and we can’t stop living. In all things, we have to exercise wisdom.
My personal step of faith happened when I retired from teaching after 8 years of being in the classroom. That was a huge risk but I was absolutely sure I was doing the right thing. Walking out of that the door into the hallway revealed a new door for me. Don’t be afraid of being in the hallway of life.
