Today we’d like to introduce you to Monika Demmler.
Hi Monika, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My story begins with a car accident on the German autobahn. I was in a carshare on the way to my doctoral defense from Berlin to Munich. The car got hit by a truck high-speed while I was in the right front seat. Being not able to do anything for 6-12 months, I’ve realized life is too short and I like to do what I love in my life, which is my passion for music. After recovering, I went on a trip to the South of the USA, visiting music places such as New Orleans. On this trip, I met musicians from Los Angeles, and it was the first time I stepped in a car again – a road trip from Austin (where I bought my first vintage Silvertone guitar) to Los Angeles where I ended up in many jam sessions and I guess learnt how to play by ear as well as songwriting. I’ve been playing instruments since my childhood, but was trained more classically reading notes – so being able to just play without “helpers” was something I was very eager to learn.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. It’s been magical though. There is the financial factor, sometimes the push-through difficulties as a woman, or moments of exhaustion as a DIY artist. However, whenever I was at a point giving up, right then something magical happened. A little example was a scene years back when I literally just put my first EP “Gaia” out with kind of zero followers, haha. I worked really hard recording my first songs in a studio, financing it from my job as a teacher and figuring out how to release a record all by myself. As a result, I felt no one was actually interested in my music (I also had no clue how to promote a record back then) and decided to go back to my teacher job. After I’ve made this decision for myself, I walked into a café in Los Angeles and my new song “Gaia” was playing and the owner told me he just discovered my music on Spotify and how he loved it. That was a weird coincidence and gave me a sign to keep going 🙂
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m very interested in Solfeggio frequencies and so I’m figuring out the best way of integrating them into the production process, enriching my message by giving soundwaves a deeper meaning. What I’m working on right now is my next album “Love Bomb” – it’s based on Einstein’s letter to his daughter, stating that the antidote to the nuclear bomb is the love bomb, however no one has constructed it yet. I’m not quite sure if the letter actually really exists or not – I’ve come across it and I pretended it to be true which inspired me to work on an album based on frequencies of love to spread positive vibes. So yes, what sets me apart is I guess my attempt to combine art with science? Another thing I’m after is combining music styles – I like mixing up and discovering what comes out – it’s time for a new style, isn’t it?
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Keep doing what you love from your heart, believe in yourself and take one step at a time.
I think one big mistake is wanting everything at once. I feel like both my music and myself are growing step by step. I’m enjoying learning day by day in various areas – songwriting, and performing. Being a musician is so varied and very individual. I think everyone needs to find out what works for him/her best and what you like to do, and maybe even learn who you are. Every journey is different.
