Today we’d like to introduce you to Monique McGee.
Hi Monique, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have been a creative for as long as I can remember. Even as a little girl, I had a love for all things art. I was always the quiet kid. I spent most of my time drawing and designing clothes. I couldn’t use a sewing machine at the time so I would make clothes and bags by hand with needle and thread. Back then, we didn’t have internet so, I would hand draw and design anything I could imagine. I was always looking at ways to expand my imagination and create something new. As I got older, I began utilizing computer programs for my designs. Fast forward to 2020, I purchased a computer controlled cutting machine. That’s when Abstract Expressions, LLC was truly born. I began learning how to design and cut various things from t-shirts to invitations. I was in love. I then decided that I wanted to expand my knowledge of graphic design even further. I took a course at Emory University and obtained a certificate in graphic design. I then purchased my very first laser cutting machine and the rest was history! I began working with various event pros such as bakers, chefs and event planners to design and customize acrylic and wood pieces. Every day I’m growing in this field and only getting better at my craft.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In the beginning, the road was tumultuous to say the least. Initially I wasn’t able to get out and network in order to build strong business relationships. During Covid, everything was shut down. There were no events or networking opportunities. I also almost allowed fear and doubt get in the way of me doing what I know I was meant to do.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a creative who specializes in laser cutting and design of various mediums. I am known for taking an idea or concept and making it come to life. My clients trust me to take their vision and make it a reality. I love what I do. Every piece that I create and design comes straight from my heart and this big imagination. I am most proud of my ability to push through and not allow fear to hold me back. Although some days are still challenging in this area, but I can honestly say that I have come a long way. The thing that sets me apart from others is my imagination. Nothing is too big or too challenging for me. In fact, when it comes to acrylics, the harder the project the more exciting it is to create.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’d love readers to remember that creativity doesn’t have to fit into a traditional box. If there is a medium that you feel curious about, lean into it. I find so much joy in transforming simple sheets of acrylic something expressive and meaningful. Laser cutting allows me to merge creativity with precision and I hope my work inspires others to explore new materials and make art that reflects who they are. I am always excited to connect with other creatives and collaborate on new ways to make art.
