Check Out My_Kayla’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to My_Kayla.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
As cliché as it sounds, I did not choose a career in music, instead the career chose me. Since a young child, I knew I wanted to be a rapper. I wrote my first rap song at seven years old and participated in many creative activities in my youth which stimulated my passion. After dropping a few “starter songs” from 2013-2016, I decided to take my music seriously and began fine-tuning my craft. My diligence paid off and led to a successful indie album release titled The 20th Summer, which also attracted the attention of publishing companies that specialize in sync licensing!

I signed a publishing deal with Brand X Music under the name Kaya Ka$h and also released independent projects under my stage name (i.e., My_Kayla) with Mayhem Music. Within the last year, I have released an EP titled Varsity Fresh, appeared on the hit game show Press Your Luck, and landed song placements with Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Fortnite, Netflix, MLB Network, The Food Network and more!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My journey in music has NOT been smooth thus far. I’ve had many stagnant moments due to career changes, life issues, writer’s block and lack of finances to name a few. Being an independent artist requires you to learn on the fly, take on many tasks all while making music. Early in my career, I’ve made mistakes such as trusting the wrong people, budgeting incorrectly, not saving files correctly and procrastinating. Moreover, as a creative, we have the habit of overthinking and being hyper-critical of our work. This can lead to negative emotions and thoughts of quitting. I’ve had highs and lows, but I never gave up. I owe it to myself to keep going!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My name is My_Kayla and I am a rapper and songwriter. I specialize in making good music 🙂 ! I write music for all genres including country, r&b, pop and house. I have many music placements that have been on TV and in movies. These days I am most proud of my publishing work. It brings me lots of joy to hear my voice on the big screen. The thing that sets my work apart from others is my constant evolution. Along with music, I’ve studied film, photography, acting and creative writing. I am a student who has a deep appreciation for art, and I am always exploring/experimenting ways to improve my sound. I’d also have to say my humbleness and ability to adapt sets me apart from others. I am always willing to learn and take constructive criticism. I also have a deep-found love for hip-hop. I respect the art form and want to be regarded as a legend.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory happened on my 13th birthday when my mother took the family on a trip to Orland, FL to visit Universal Studios. That was my first time in Florida. We visited attractions all over Orlando including Gator Land which was a big live alligator exhibit. While there we took photos on top of a real alligator which was super thrilling. My mother made sure I enjoyed my birthday and I appreciate her for doing that.
