Today we’d like to introduce you to Nadine Johnson
Hi Nadine, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My journey began with humble roots, where the values of hard work, perseverance, and resilience were instilled in me from a young age. These values guided me through my academic pursuits, culminating in a degree in business, and eventually led me to a successful career in corporate management, with a focus on analytics, finance, and operations. While in Jamaica, I built a life that balanced my professional ambitions with a deep commitment to my family. Yet, when I migrated to the U.S., I faced the challenges that many immigrants do, restarting from scratch and finding my place in a new world.
My first job in caregiving, which many would view as a stepping stone, became a pivotal turning point in my life. It offered me a profoundly different perspective on both career and life. Working as a caregiver allowed me to connect with people from all walks of life, many of whom had experienced significant physical, emotional, or cognitive losses. This role not only deepened my sense of empathy but also taught me the invaluable lesson that success is not just about numbers, profits, or efficiency, but about making a positive impact on others.
In particular, I was deeply moved by the experiences of individuals who had lost their independence. Witnessing their vulnerability, resilience, and strength inspired me to create something bigger than myself. I envisioned a space where people, no matter their age, background, or circumstance, could receive the care, respect, and support they needed to live with dignity and to maintain a sense of self-worth.
After several years of working closely with patients from all walks of life, I decided to take a bold leap of faith. In 2012, I opened my first personal care home. This wasn’t just a business venture; it was a mission to provide a nurturing, compassionate environment for those who needed it most. My goal was—and remains—to create a place where individuals can thrive in an atmosphere of respect, empathy, and care.
Since then, I’ve dedicated myself to expanding my vision, always grounded in the core values that have guided me throughout my life: compassion, integrity, and a relentless commitment to improving the quality of life for those I serve. What started as a personal transformation has blossomed into a life’s work, one that continues to inspire me each day.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Moving to a new country and starting over from scratch was a big challenge. As a migrant, I had to adapt to a new culture, build a professional network, and find stability. Shifting from a corporate career to caregiving was also a humbling experience—it required me to adjust my expectations and learn new skills, while also grappling with the emotional and physical demands of the job. There were moments of self-doubt, especially when I faced setbacks or felt the weight of responsibility for others’ well-being. However, these struggles helped me grow, both personally and professionally, and gave me a deeper sense of purpose in my work. Each challenge reinforced my desire to create spaces for people to feel cared for and valued.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The heart in our logo is symbolic of where our ability to care comes from, the care that COFI is built on (INSERT LOGO HERE ). COFI was founded to fill a crucial gap in senior care: providing a clean, safe, and compassionate environment where frail seniors can feel truly at home. Our personal care homes are intentionally designed to feel like real homes, not institutions,a place where both residents and their families can relax, find comfort, and feel at ease.
What truly sets us apart is our unwavering commitment to helping seniors age in place with dignity and autonomy. At COFI, we understand that as we grow older, the desire for independence and control over our lives becomes even more important. That’s why we focus not only on the physical aspects of care but also on nurturing emotional well-being. Aging is a deeply personal journey, and we work to ensure our residents feel heard, valued, and respected every step of the way. Our homes are built on the principles of community, inclusion, and belonging, creating an environment where seniors can live with peace, grace, and respect.
I’m particularly proud of how we’ve maintained a high standard of care across all our locations in Georgia. We’ve developed a care model that works, offering both security and peace of mind to families who trust us with their loved ones. Our approach goes beyond simply meeting physical needs; it’s about enriching the quality of life for each individual, ensuring they can thrive in an environment where they feel supported and cared for.
The inspiration behind COFI is deeply personal. It comes from thinking about how I would want my own mother to be cared for as she ages. Like many families, I wanted a place where she could feel comfortable, maintain her sense of self, and retain a sense of control. That vision led me to create COFI—a place where seniors can age with dignity, continue to express themselves, and feel truly cared for. Today, we’re proud to be a trusted partner for families who want the best possible care for their loved ones in a home-like setting.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I believe the most important quality to our success is empathy. Empathy is at the core of everything we do at COFI, whether it’s in our approach to caring for our residents or in how we build lasting relationships with their families. It’s what allows us to truly understand and address the unique emotional and physical needs of each person we care for. This empathetic approach helps us create a home-like environment where seniors feel comfortable, respected, and valued.
Additionally, empathy has driven our commitment to maintaining a high standard of care across all our locations. It’s what helps us stay connected to the families we serve and ensure that their loved ones are treated with the dignity and autonomy they deserve as they age. This sense of compassion is what sets us apart and has been key to our growth and success. Ultimately, it’s the foundation for building trust, which is essential in providing peace of mind to families and making a real difference in the lives of those we care for.
