Today we’d like to introduce you to Nakia Booker.
Hi Nakia, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I started this project in 2020, right after Brother Floyd was murdered. It was such a painful moment of trauma for Black people in America and around the world, but it birthed an undeniable voice through art. I saw all of the beautiful art on Instagram that was being produced during the civil unrest and was completely inspired to contribute in my own way.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The process of releasing The Black Artivism Capsule became a spiritual journey for me. I’ve often dimmed my light to make others comfortable and by going through my process of curating the book. I was finally allowing myself permission to honor my gifts and talents unapologetically. It’s so much greater than me, yet it required full acceptance of myself to help me remind others they, too, are worthy and qualified.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a curator and creative with a love of all things Fashion, Art, and Music. I’m the author of the newly released coffee table book MMXX: The Black Artivism Capsule, which I am very proud of. Through the curation of the book, I hope to shed light on all of the amazing artists featured, and books can be purchased directly through my website here https://blackartivism.co/. (Wholesale orders are available as well)
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Don’t be afraid to live your truth, even when it makes other people uncomfortable. It will be through bold living that we inspire others to embrace themselves as they truly are.
