Today we’d like to introduce you to Passion Burnell.
Hi Passion, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have been drawing and coloring since I could write but growing up a millennial, we were told Art couldn’t be a career, so I never pursued it.
Fast forward to the era of social media and the pandemic, and I decided since we were just sitting in the house that I would start an account and share my art with the world. In the beginning, it wasn’t fulfilling because I was only posting my art, nothing personal, not the woman behind the pencil. I decided to pivot last year and post all the things that make me, ME! I showed up online as my authentic self and grew a community that I am so proud of today!
I was able to expand my art + style into an online art shop, book illustrator, and content creator.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The road thus far has been everything but smooth. Wearing so many hats outside of content (9 to 5, wife, mother, daughter, homeowner the list goes on), my energy often time depletes and I need to give myself grace and take breaks.
I will say I find it easier to create when you love what you creating. I’m still having fun with it so I love showing up for me and my community week after week.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an illustrator and sneakerhead guru. I love creating black/brown female characters that represent people like me. Society oftentimes like to put us in a box and tell us how we are supposed to look and I love to break down those barriers and show the world that we are dope in every single way we show up!
My art is inspired by sneakers, streetwear, 90s cartoons, and nostalgia. Currently, I am most proud of my first illustrated book! It was so challenging yet rewarding. I now have a goal to publish both a coloring book and children’s book (written and illustrated by myself).
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Authenticity is and will always be #1! It’s very easy to get caught up in what others are doing. To compare your journey to someone else who may be in a different chapter.
I think just showing up as me and doing what is in my will house allows a space for me to receive genuine love and support.
I have a mantra that I stand on daily, “Be your own cool”.
