Today we’d like to introduce you to Petrona Joseph.
Hi Petrona, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey began with a deep passion for storytelling, advocacy, and creating spaces where difficult conversations could happen openly. As a communications strategist and mental health advocate, I’ve always believed that stories have the power to shift culture, reduce stigma, and help people feel less alone.
Much of my work was inspired by personal experiences and witnessing how often mental health struggles are misunderstood, stigmatized, or hidden in silence. I wanted to change that narrative. That mission led me to write my first book, Stigmatized: Breaking the Silence and Demystifying Mental Illness, which focuses on opening honest conversations around mental health.
As my work evolved, I began speaking, advocating, and creating platforms centered around healing, awareness, and emotional well-being. My second book, Unsafe Love: Healing from Trauma Bonds, Betrayal and Unsafe Attachments, expands that conversation by exploring the emotional patterns and relationship dynamics that many people struggle with but rarely talk about openly.
Today, I’m proud to be a published author in both the United States and Canada, a speaker, and a mental health advocate committed to helping people understand their stories, heal from trauma, and break cycles that keep them stuck. My work is rooted in the belief that healing begins when we bring what’s hidden into the light.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many people who choose to do work centered around advocacy and storytelling, a lot of my journey has required persistence, resilience, and faith in the bigger mission.
One of the biggest challenges has been navigating conversations around mental health and trauma in spaces where stigma still exists. Speaking openly about topics like mental illness, trauma bonds, and unsafe relationships can be uncomfortable for many people, but those are exactly the conversations that need to happen.
There have also been challenges that come with building something meaningful from the ground up—whether that’s establishing credibility as an author, creating platforms for advocacy, or balancing the emotional weight that often comes with working in the mental health space.
But those struggles have also been some of the most important parts of the journey. They’ve strengthened my commitment to this work and reminded me why it matters. Every obstacle has reinforced my belief that telling our stories and creating space for healing can truly make a difference in people’s lives.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m an award-winning publicist, communications strategist, author, and mental health advocate whose work focuses on the power of storytelling to create social impact. My career has been rooted in helping individuals and organizations communicate their stories in ways that inspire awareness, shift narratives, and spark meaningful change.
Over the years, I’ve built a reputation for combining strategic communications with advocacy. While my background is in public relations and media strategy, much of my work today centers on mental health awareness, trauma education, and emotional well-being. I’m the author of Stigmatized: Breaking the Silence and Demystifying Mental Illness and Unsafe Love: Healing from Trauma Bonds, Betrayal and Unsafe Attachments, two books that explore complex topics many people experience but often struggle to talk about openly.
Through my writing, speaking engagements, and advocacy, I’m known for creating safe and thoughtful spaces where difficult conversations can happen—whether that’s around mental health, trauma, relationships, or healing. My goal is always to help people better understand their experiences while breaking the stigma that often surrounds these topics.
What I’m most proud of is being able to use my platform to help others feel seen and less alone. When someone tells me that a conversation I started or something I wrote helped them better understand themselves or begin their healing journey, that’s incredibly meaningful to me.
What sets me apart is my ability to bridge strategy and purpose. As an award-winning publicist, I understand how powerful visibility and messaging can be. As an author and advocate, I use that knowledge to elevate conversations that matter and bring attention to issues that are often overlooked. At the core of my work is a commitment to creating impact through storytelling, education, and advocacy.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I’d love for your readers to know that healing, growth, and understanding are possible for everyone, even when the journey feels complicated or overwhelming. Through my work as an award-winning publicist, author, and mental health advocate, I’ve seen firsthand the power of sharing our stories and creating space for honest conversations.
I encourage anyone who has experienced trauma, betrayal, or mental health challenges to know that their experiences are valid—and that seeking support and understanding is a sign of strength, not weakness. My goal is to continue breaking stigma, fostering awareness, and helping people feel less alone on their healing journeys.
For those interested, I’m also excited to share that I’ll be hosting a book signing for Unsafe Love: Healing from Trauma Bonds, Betrayal and Unsafe Attachments on May 7, where I’ll have the chance to connect with readers and discuss these important topics in person. My hope is that through these conversations, more people feel empowered to take steps toward healing and self-discovery.
