Check Out Porshay Mays’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Porshay Mays.

Hi Porshay, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born in California, but I was mainly raised in Colorado. A little under a month after I graduated high school, I moved to Atlanta. I originally moved because I wanted to do real estate and to be a make-up artist, but nails captured me and truly allowed me to be artistic I’ve been doing nails for about 3 1/2 years and I still feel like I’m just getting started and have so much more to do and so much further to go!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely was not smooth at all. I mainly got into nails, heavy in 2020 after I lost my job during the pandemic, I decided to use my talents to make money to take care of the bills, and I started working in the shop. I learned a lot and I picked up a lot of skills, but I also learned a lot of life lessons being there. Once I left the shop, I decided to do nails from home which was still somewhat of a challenge for me because I was trying to keep my privacy and still have my home be a sanctuary for myself. I moved into a suite in August of 2021. But business was slow so I ended up moving out, and I actually stopped doing nails for a while, but over the course of me not doing nails anymore, I started to miss it. That’s when I came up with my press on brand, it allowed me to still express my creativity without having to deal with people face-to-face on a constant daily basis in my home.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a nail tech who specializes in hand-drawn art. I am most known for my quality and my retention, as well as the amount of creative things I can do on a small canvas. I have always been into art, and I’ve always loved to draw, but I am most proud of the fact that my art continues to make people happy every time I execute. I personally feel like what sets me apart from others is the fact that I really take the time to make sure that my client gets exactly what they want. I am an ultra-perfectionist, and if it’s not right, I will do it over and over again until I get it right.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I am mainly self-taught, but I would like to say that the manager at the shop that I worked at, her name is Journey, her Ig is NailedbyNubia, she will always get the credit for helping me execute and lock in on my technique when it comes to nails, I used to sit by her and just watch her and try to mimic the things that she did and the more that I did it, the better that I got. she was very patient with me and she genuinely taught me how to get my nails to look good, and for that, I am forever grateful
