Today we’d like to introduce you to Rafael Castillo.
Hi Rafael, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
My name is Rafael Castillo. I am an Afro-Latino Actor, Poet, and BTS Photographer. I have an extremely color background that beautifully shaped who I am today. I grew up in an immigrant household, raised by my Dominican family. I lived all around Atlanta half my life, and moved to Miami for the second half. My personality, and experiences come from a mix of the Blackest, and most Caribbean cities in the country, and a home with immigrant roots. It’s all made me who I am, and I hope to bring the beauty of it all to the screen as my career in film evolves. I’m forever grateful for everything, and everyone who has played a part. It’s what makes me.. me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Relatively? Yes, though I should preface this with the fact that I’m an optimist and always try to find the blessing in everything, good or bad. I have just heard of so many stories about people’s journey in this game, that I can see that my career so far has been a blessing. Has it come with its trails? Of course, but nothing I couldn’t handle or anyone else has never been though. I’m grateful for everyone around me who has played apart in it as well. Family and friends, fellow actors, creatives, and coaches, my manager Tracy, my agent Terry… all of them play a part. Those people make the trials easier to overcome.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a creative who’s passion is acting lol That’s the best way I can put it. Acting is the forefront of everything I do, but I’m also a poet, I shoot BTS photography, and I’ve also been dabbling in music. I’m just a lover of the arts lol. As far as my work(Acting wise), I’ve been blessed to work on a couple cool projects in my 5 years. I am probably most known for playing “Devonte Jones” on Black Lightning(The CW). I’m currently recurring in BMF, which has been amazing to see each week, but more than anything I’m really excited about what’s to come. Stay tuned for my episode of Tales on BET, and I’m currently shooting a very exciting project for Netflix. Outside of acting, the only thing I wanna s/o rn is my BTS photography page @ViewsFromSet when I’m not acting on set, I like to walk around, and catch moments. It’s been a real joy to see the page grow, and I love that everyone is enjoying it. It’s my journey, through my lens.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
Man.. I really don’t know lmao That’s a tuff question. I guess most people would never realized how reserved I can be. I like to people-please and with that comes the responsibility of being a good time and very social when I’m out and about, but I’m most comfortable/at peace when I’m home in my room, watching something on TV… usually in the dark. Lol.
