Today we’d like to introduce you to Reyn Doi.
Hi Reyn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’m Reyn Doi an actor from Hawaii. I was born and raised there and just recently moved permanently to Los Angeles. I started out my career doing workshops in Hawaii and one day I was offered the opportunity to join a workshop in Los Angeles. The first audition I went to, I booked. I was 9 years old at the time and I was a dancer for a Christmas speaker commercial and I had my own commercial made for me. It was such a great experience for my first job and motivated me!
From there, I went back and forth from L.A. to Hawaii. Within those couple of years of going back and forth, I did a couple of TV jobs and commercials. The first turning point of my career was when I booked a strong supporting role in a Lionsgate feature film called Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar starring Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo. I got to travel to Cancun, Mexico City, and Albuquerque.
This was the first trip I ever took for working. I had so many fabulous experiences while filming, that I never thought I would have. After this booking, I booked two Nickelodeon shows as a guest star recurring role. The show names were Drama Club and Side Hustle. Earlier this year Lionsgate announced the release date for Barb and Star and I was able to go through an amazing process with publicity and interviews. I got to do interviews for newspapers, magazines, and more! Recently, I was able to travel to Atlanta for my first time for a Netflix feature film. I was amazed at the different atmosphere, food (which was delicious), and I hope I can continue to book jobs that take me to new places. My journey is continuously taking evolving and letting me have new experiences. I’m excited to see how my journey will turn out!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not always been a smooth road. It’s like a rollercoaster ride where sometimes I work a lot, but sometimes no matter how many auditions I take, I don’t book anything. When that happens, I do get discouraged and sad, but when I’m working I am always happy.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in comedy and am a comedic actor. I’m most proud of my feature film with Kristen Wiig because I had scenes with her in the movie. I opened the movie and closed the movie, which is definitely a big step for my career. I’m proud of how far I’ve come with my career.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love the southern hospitality and how everyone is so friendly and polite. It made me feel very welcomed. I wish there were more authentic Japanese restaurants around where I stayed.
