Today we’d like to introduce you to Ronnie Wilson.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My story begins in a small, rural town in South Carolina. That is where my passion for music was first ignited. Being born into a musical family, my parents say I was singing as soon as I could form words. I grew up in the church and that is where all of my earliest singing memories come from. My mom was the choir director so you already know she made sure I was singing every Sunday!
I believe I was around 5 years old when I had my first solo and haven’t stopped since. I spent the next several years singing at many churches and competing in several competitions before obtaining my bachelor’s degree from The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Work (my 9-to-5) moved me to the Midwest where I was able to extend my musical network, gain background vocalist experience for a gospel recording artist, and participate in my first live recording. I relocated to Atlanta in 2021 and have been very active posting singing videos online as well as working on original music.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. When I moved to the Midwest I didn’t know anyone, so finding producers and musical friends was a challenge at first. Thankfully social media exists today and I was able to connect with people from there. The next hurdle I encountered was self inflicted. I was allowing my full-time job to take up all of my time and energy, so unfortunately music fell to the wayside. Without music to lift my spirits, I felt lost and empty. Then I met someone who not only became my partner in life, but who also reminded me of my love for music while motivating me to never lose sight of it again.
Unfortunately, he passed away early 2021 which is by far the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to endure. I lost a piece of my heart that day but I gained an eternal motivator. Music has helped me heal and I’ve been able to turn my grief into beautiful bodies of work.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a singer/songwriter. For most of my life, I referred to myself as “someone who sings” but today I can proudly call myself a singer. Right now, I’m most known for posting cover songs on social media but I am working on original music as well. I have also made a few funny videos of secular artists (Ariana Grande, Saucy Santana, Mary J Blige) dancing to gospel songs that have gone viral. What sets me apart from others is that I have a true love and appreciation for music. I’m not doing this for money, but because I believe it’s my purpose in life. Singing brings me joy and makes me feel whole. I have studied many genres of music (gospel, pop, country, R&B, rock, etc) and they call can be heard in the musical choices that I make when singing. Gospel music especially utilizes a lot of harmonies, so growing up in the church and mainly listening to gospel, I gained an ear for easily hearing harmonies. That skill has come in handy throughout my lifetime.
How do you think about happiness?
Most of my happiness stems from God, music, and friends/family. These things have always centered me in life and provided me with a sense of comfort and security. When either of these areas aren’t as strong as they should be, my entire life is impacted in a negative way.
