Today we’d like to introduce you to Ryan Smith.
Hi Ryan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
In my senior year of high school, I decided that I wanted to go into real estate and strongly considered jumping straight in after my graduation and not going to college. I ended up not going that route and attended college at Tennessee State University and studied Agricultural Sciences. I got job after I graduated and stayed there for a year until I decided to pursue Real Estate, enroll in courses, and move to Houston, Texas. It’s been a year now, and my career is growing and I’m excited to see where it will take me.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No definitely not a smooth road, but it hasn’t been extremely bumpy either. I’d have to say a lot of the struggles along the way were my own doing. I had the support of my family and friends along with the means to get where I needed to be to start my journey. I guess once on it, I dealt with a lot of self-doubts that lead to things like procrastination with finishing my classes, pushing my exam off because I felt like I wasn’t ready, and not marketing myself even now.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a Houston Realtor. Right now, I am working with residential lease clients. I also can help people buy or sell a home.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I’d say pick out a mentor early. What I mean by that is even if you haven’t started your journey, go ahead and reach out to someone that you would like to be your mentor. Let them know what it is you’re wanting to do and allow them to help guide you as you get started. That is what I did. I let my mentor know I was moving to the city and planned on getting my license. I had her guidance the entire way starting with trying to select a school to take my courses at. When it comes to networking, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Yes, you are trying to get to know people and make connections, but also take it as an opportunity to allow the people around you to share their experiences and what they’ve learned along the way.
