Today we’d like to introduce you to Shania Joseph.
Hi Shania, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up surrounded by photography—my mom captured moments when I was younger, and my brother followed in her footsteps. It was always there, but I never really saw myself stepping behind the camera. That changed when I finally decided to give it a try. The moment I picked up a camera, something clicked—literally and figuratively. It wasn’t just about taking pictures; it felt like a gift, something God had placed in my hands for a purpose.
At first, it was just a hobby, something I enjoyed exploring. But the more I practiced, the more I saw the potential—not just in my skills but in how photography could glorify God. I started noticing beauty in the small things, in the way light hit a person’s face, in the emotions behind a candid moment. Photography became more than just capturing images; it became a way to tell stories, to freeze time, to reflect the creativity of the One who made it all.
It hasn’t always been easy. There were moments of doubt, times when I questioned whether I was good enough, and struggles with balancing my passion with everything else in life. Even now, engagement and wedding planning have brought their own challenges, making it hard to feel supported in my dreams. But through it all, I’ve held onto the truth that this isn’t just something I love—it’s something God has placed on my heart for a reason.
Now, I’m still on the journey, learning, growing, and trusting that God will continue to open doors. Photography isn’t just a career or a side passion—it’s a calling, and I’m stepping into it with faith.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been easy. There were moments of doubt, times when I questioned whether I was good enough, and struggles with balancing my passion with everything else in life. Even now, engagement and wedding planning have brought their own challenges, making it hard to feel supported in my dreams. And also just having big dreams and wanting to fulfill it
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My photography journey has been shaped by my love for capturing authentic moments, from weddings to couples to branding sessions, and recently, I’ve developed a passion for sports photography. I specialize in freezing fast-paced action while still conveying the emotions and intensity of the game. Whether it’s the determination in an athlete’s eyes, the split-second victory celebration, or the sheer energy of competition, you strive to tell a story through every shot.
I’m known for your ability to blend storytelling with technical skill, ensuring that every image not only looks great but also evokes a feeling. What sets me apart is my perspective—I see photography as more than just pictures; it’s a way to glorify God by capturing His creation in motion.
One of the things I’m most proud of is how you’ve grown in my craft, stepping out of my comfort zone and embracing new challenges like sports photography. Each game, each moment, and each experience is another opportunity to learn and refine my skills, and I’m excited to see where this passion takes me next.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Absolutely! If you’re just starting out in photography, here are a few things I wish I had known when I began:
1. Start with What You Have
You don’t need the best camera or the most expensive gear to get started. Work with what you have, even if it’s just your phone. The key is to learn how to see light, composition, and emotion in your shots.
2. Practice Consistently
Photography is a skill that improves with time. Shoot as often as possible—whether it’s a game, a family gathering, or just an empty street. The more you practice, the more comfortable you’ll become with your camera and creative eye.
3. Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment
Try different styles and techniques. Even though I’ve started loving sports photography, I didn’t limit myself to just one thing at first. Explore portraits, landscapes, or event photography to find what excites you the most.
4. Learn the Basics of Editing
Editing can make a huge difference. Take time to learn how to enhance your photos with software like Lightroom or Photoshop. Start simple and grow from there.
5. Build Relationships and Network
One of the biggest ways to grow is by connecting with other photographers. Learn from them, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to reach out for mentorship. You never know what opportunities can come from just introducing yourself.
6. Charge What You’re Worth
If you start taking paid gigs, don’t undervalue yourself. It’s okay to start small, but know your worth and don’t be afraid to charge for your time and skills.
7. Trust the Process & Glorify God Through It
Most importantly, remember why you’re doing this. If photography is something God has placed on your heart, trust that He will guide you through it. There will be discouraging moments, but if you keep going and keep your focus on Him, He will open doors you never expected.
