Today we’d like to introduce you to Simone Hunt.
Simone, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up in Jamaica, Queens (NY). I have always been surrounded by fashion. My grandmother was a seamstress. My older sisters were always stylish. One of my sisters went to school to study fashion. I had cousins who were designers and put on their own fashion shows. As a child and in my adult years, I was also labeled as “shy or quiet”, so I expressed myself through my style. I really took a serious interest in fashion when I went to high school in Brooklyn. It was definitely an eye-opener because the upperclassmen wore high end designers like Prada, Dior and Gucci. I was hooked, lol. From then on, I felt like my sense of style had developed. Fast Forward to College, I went to Virginia Union University in which I majored in social work, this major chose me as I always had the desire to help people in the community. I would eventually earn my master’s degree in social work while working two full-time jobs and being a mom. During this time, I continued to be stylish and continued to focus on the fashion trends. After I completed my master’s degree, I still felt incomplete as far as career-wise. I knew I wanted to pursue fashion in a professional manner. I completed research and enrolled in a styling certification class to start my journey as a Stylist. I started working with different magazines as an editorial stylist, I began selling accessories, styling fashion shows and began to sell thrifted clothing. I finally felt like I was walking in my purpose. I continued with my journey in social work, and I obtained my License in Clinical Social which is the highest level in social work. Throughout this journey, I discovered I wanted to combine the two, so I decided to develop a t-shirt/Hoodie line to bring awareness to mental health especially for my community. The T-shirts/Hoodies state “Fashion is Good for my Mental Health “. With the success of my T-shirt line, I am starting a boutique “Simone Vee” to debut in Spring 2022. Also in the Spring of 2022, I am launching The Style Wellness Group, LLC which will be a counseling and coaching company.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, of course not. There are always going to be obstacles. To me, obstacles help strengthen you as an entrepreneur and as a person. It’s tough, some days I am discouraged and begin to doubt myself. However, I remember my purpose and the goals that I want to achieve.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a Therapist (LCSW) as well as a Stylist/Style Coach in which I assist women with improving their negative thoughts on themselves by providing them with attainable styling solutions. I am mostly proud of being able to step out on faith and my ability to try new things. The thing that sets me apart from others is that I have a unique perspective on style due to my clinical background. It’s not about just clothes, it’s about your emotions and how you feel in your clothing.
If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
The quality or characteristic that I feel that is most important to my success is not being afraid to fail. I am not afraid to try new ideas. I am also extremely determined and most importantly consistent. I am always a student; I am always willing to improve my craft and learn new techniques. I am grateful to have the support of my husband and son as well as family and friends.
