Check Out Tai Davis’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tai Davis.

Tai, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m originally from Birmingham, AI. When I graduated from high school, I went to Kernersville, NC where I then graduated from Dudley Cosmetology University. Afterwards, I moved to Atlanta, GA, where I began my cosmetology career. Behind the chair, I was known for soft and silky silk presses, my flat sew-in weaves and my precise haircutting skills. I spent 17 years behind the chair. In 2013, I met my husband so life started to evolve on a different way for me. We now have two beautiful children. After I had my 2nd child, I had a stroke two weeks after giving birth due to a c-section. I developed a blood clot in my leg that traveled to my brain. I was in the shower shampooing my hair, and like a light switch, I collapsed, and I was paralyzed from head to toe. My husband found me lying on the floor in the bathroom and I had to be rushed to the emergency room by ambulance and I had to have immediate brain surgery! Meanwhile, while I was seven months pregnant with the same pregnancy, I developed a brain tumor that I also was told to seek immediate attention for after I gave birth also.

So I had to have two brain surgeries in one year at the age of 33. It was emotionally, mentally, and physically draining and a lot to process because I was completely healthy before all of these events occurred. So into my 3rd week of recovery from my second brain surgery, I decided I was not going to go back behind the chair because it was too much on my body physically to stand those long hours. I was scared; I didn’t know how I was going to help provide for my family. I had no money coming in, although my husband was working. I wasn’t used to sitting at home with no income coming in. So I took a part-time waitressing job for my sanity. So I kept asking myself how can I make money in my sleep and what would this transition from behind the chair look like for me. So I decided to start at what I was known for behind the chair and translate that over to an e-commerce website. It was a scary transition because it was all new for me to step into the e-commerce world lol.

Like most businesses, I went through a lot of trial and error’s but eventually, I figured it out. I have a product line for hair that is going well, and now I make custom-made wigs for women with hair loss or if they just want to wear it as a fashion trend. I have Added wig making class. I travel, teaching beauty entrepreneurs how to make wigs and how to jumpstart their careers in the beauty industry. And I also have an online wig course. One thing we know for sure beauty is never going anywhere. Lastly, I decided to turn my mess into my messages. My health issues inspired me to write a book titled Bounce Back. It’s a self-help book, guided to teach women how to to go from struggle to success coupled with coaching homework sessions at the end of each chapter. It’s now selling on Amazon Kindle, paperback, and Barnes & Noble.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Business and life in general is never a smooth road. I had a lot of doubt and fear of not succeeding. Finding the right vendors. Having the money to test and try different products to find out what works and what doesn’t. Having two small kids with very little help was my biggest drawback. Trying to take care of at the time when I started my business a two year old and a new born and figuring this whole new business world out.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a licensed hairstylist (retired) I’m a wig maker. I teach group and one on one wig classes. I have an online wig course. I have a hair care product line. And I’m an Author. ✍🏾

I’m most proud of all of my accomplishments listed above and being a mother and wife. What sets me apart from others is that even though I’m no longer behind the hair I still promote healthy hair care underneath wigs. And I’m a stickler for great customer service.

What makes you happy?
My family. It’s my happy place. Businesses can come and go, and it gets very stressful at times. When I’m with my family, it reminds me of what really matters at the core.
