Check Out Tara Simmons’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tara Simmons.

Hi Tara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my photography journey in January 2021. Prior to the start of my journey, I never had much interest in the arts. However, I feel like photography is what I was called to do. I woke up one day and just really wanted to pursue photography. It wasn’t about the money I could make but instead, it was about the happiness and forever moments I could create. I knew absolutely nothing about what type of camera or equipment I needed but I began to study, watch videos, ask questions, and make connections with individuals in the industry. I would sit at my full-time job and just study all day! Once I was comfortable, I bought my first camera and started to practice what I’d learned. I started taking clients in February 2021 and I continue to grow and glow.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road to success hasn’t been smooth by far. I am self-taught and a very fast learner, so I quickly outgrew my “starter kit.” I knew my first camera and the lens just weren’t that great and I needed more. Upgrading equipment was expensive but definitely worth it. However, it doesn’t stop there so keeping up with new technology can be financially challenging if things are slow.

I also taught myself almost everything I know about shooting in manual and retouching. Sometimes keeping up with the changes in software can be challenge because when you get comfortable and figure out your workflow, it can change. The best part is that I never stop learning.

Another challenge is wearing all the hats in my business. I am the sole owner and operator of Tara Synclaire Photography. This means that I am responsible for every aspect of my business including booking, consultations, photographing sessions, retouching, social media, and accounting. My goal in the near future is to outsource most of these things and focus on the sessions and retouching only.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a portrait photographer and I specialize in lifestyle and glamour portraits. I also enjoy capturing headshots for businesses and working with content creators. I am known for bokeh, more commonly known as blurred backgrounds, dark and moody outdoor portraits, and clean and crisp indoor portraits. I am also known for monochromatic sessions. I enjoy monochromatic looks so much that I created a series called S H A D E S… In 2023, I will be launching a new series so be sure you’re following us on social media and you’re on the email list.

I am most proud of my growth and ability to build my clients’ confidence while creating beautiful art. I focus on comforting them and helping them build confidence from the first consultation until the photos are delivered. It’s always rewarding when I show them how nice the first few shots are and their confidence shoots through the roof.

The photography industry is pretty saturated, but I set myself apart by creating an EXPERIENCE. I am in constant contact with my clients, and we work as a team throughout the entire process. We get to know one another on a personal level instead of just business. During the consultation, I ask them about their favorite snacks, drinks, etc. and I offer to have those items available upon their arrival. My business isn’t about pictures, it’s about people. It’s not about portraits, it’s about your confidence. It’s not about transactions, it’s about relationships. And it’s not about one day, it’s about a lifetime.

So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
In my business, my client’s satisfaction matters most to me. Their confidence, smiles, cheers, and overall excitement is what keep me going. I appreciate them for allowing me to tell their stories and trusting me with their most precious moments.

In my personal world, my daughter matters the most for the same reasons and more! She is my biggest cheerleader and motivator. When times are hard, she consistently reminds me that I can’t give up.
