Check Out Taylor Jones’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Jones.

Hi Taylor, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
My journey began at the Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD), where I earned my master’s in Film and Television. I’ve always been drawn to the arts—captivated by storytelling, visuals, and the way they shape how we see the world. I went to art school to find my voice, to figure out how someone like me could not just be part of the arts, but leave a unique mark on it.

While still in school, I was eager to get real-world experience. Thanks to a classmate, I landed my first job as a production assistant (PA). That role placed me right in the heart of set life, giving me a behind-the-scenes look at hair, makeup, and wardrobe. The costume department pulled me in immediately—it felt like the perfect intersection of fashion, character, and story.

I worked as a PA on about four more films under the same production company. When the next project came around, I asked the producer if I could be the costume designer. He told me I was “jumping the gun,” but gave me a shot as a costumer. I took it—and ran with it. I learned everything I could from the designer at that time. She handed me tools, tips, and confidence that still guide me today.

From there, it all accelerated. I moved from PA to costume designer within one year, building my portfolio, reaching out to production companies, and growing my network. Each film sharpened my eye, strengthened my instincts, and added to the foundation I was building.

Eventually, designing for film led to opportunities in wardrobe styling. People began asking me to style them personally, and I discovered I could translate cinematic storytelling into everyday fashion—helping clients express themselves through clothing just like characters do on screen.

What sets my path apart is that I’m completely self-taught. I never had a mentor—just a relentless drive, a natural eye for style, and unwavering faith in God. I didn’t wait for doors to open—I knocked, pushed, and sometimes built my own. My story is one of curiosity, courage, and carving out space in an industry I love.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not a smooth road. One of the biggest challenges in this industry is the uncertainty—never knowing when the next film opportunity will come. That alone creates a lot of anxiety. On top of that, staying relevant is a constant battle. In today’s world, just having talent or a strong portfolio isn’t enough. You have to consistently post content, show your work on social media, and keep your name in the mix. I’ve learned that visibility is everything.

Another struggle is financial stability. Film work doesn’t always come back-to-back, and it doesn’t always pay enough. So when you do land a project, you’re not just creating—you’re also trying to catch up on bills and stretch every dollar. That’s actually part of why I expanded into personal styling—to create more consistency and balance, even though that comes with its own learning curve.

Even after designing costumes for over 30 films, I still face creative blocks. Each new script is a fresh challenge—figuring out how to visually build a character from scratch. And being self-taught means I’ve had to learn a lot on my own. No one showed me how to break down a script, understand body types, track trends, or build color palettes. I had one designer show me the ropes early on, but beyond that, it’s been me figuring it out as I go.

There’s also the emotional toll. Discrimination, disrespect, and gatekeeping are very real in this industry. People don’t always want to share knowledge or open doors. That isolation can make the road feel even harder. And with fewer productions happening these days, the competition is even tougher—so your mental strength has to be solid.

Still, despite all of this, I remain grateful. Every obstacle has shaped me. Every challenge has sharpened my creativity and made me more resilient. The path hasn’t been easy, but it’s mine—and I’m proud of how far I’ve come. I believe that as long as I keep pushing, creating, and staying true to my vision, I’ll keep building something meaningful.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a Costume Designer and Wardrobe Stylist who specializes in storytelling through style—whether on screen or in real life. My work lives at the intersection of fashion, character, and emotion. In film, I focus on character-driven wardrobe that blends realism with visual impact—grounding costumes in the world of the story while ensuring they remain memorable and layered with meaning. I’ve worked across genres, but I’m most drawn to contemporary settings, where wardrobe choices reflect emotional arcs, power dynamics, or a character’s inner transformation. I’m skilled at building looks that evolve, whether it’s a coming-of-age journey, a psychological shift, or a moment of personal revelation.

As a stylist, I bring that same level of intentionality and narrative to my clients. Whether it’s for a red carpet, a campaign, or a personal style transformation, I create elevated, effortless looks that feel true to the individual. My styling blends polished, preppy details with a streetwear edge—resulting in looks that feel fresh, bold, and timeless. I don’t just dress people—I help them show up as their most confident and authentic selves.

What truly sets me apart is that I’m the only masc-presenting costume designer in the film industry—and that’s something I’m deeply proud of. Being the first, and often the only, allows me to lead with visibility and purpose. I know firsthand how much it means to see someone who looks like you in a space you dream of entering. I want others in my community to see what’s possible through me. I am the representation I once needed—and now I get to be that for someone else.

Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
First and foremost, I give credit to God. My faith has carried me through an industry that’s anything but certain. In moments of doubt, confusion, or fear, it was God who gave me clarity, vision, and the courage to keep going. That foundation keeps me grounded no matter how unpredictable the road gets.

My wife deserves so much credit—she’s been my prayer warrior, my confidence booster, and my safe space when the world feels heavy. Her belief in me never wavers. She reminds me of my worth and my talent, even when I can’t see it myself.
My mom also played a huge part. Her tough love growing up prepared me for the realities of this industry. She taught me how to move through life with strength, independence, and resilience. That mindset has helped me push through countless obstacles.

My family and friends have been my cheering section since day one. Every “I’m proud of you,” every phone call, every moment they’ve celebrated a win or lifted me after a loss—it all matters. That kind of support gives me the extra push to keep chasing my dreams, even when it’s hard.

I also believe it truly takes a village. Every client who trusted me, every teammate who collaborated with me, every peer who referred my name—I’m grateful. Even those who doubted me or closed doors in my face played a part. The resistance reminded me that I must be doing something right. Sometimes your enemies confirm your purpose just as much as your supporters do. Everyone, in their own way—through prayer, encouragement, honesty, or challenge—helped shape who I am today. I carry all of that with me.
