Today we’d like to introduce you to Terrell Wilson.
Hi Terrell, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been trying to relocated to Atlanta over the past year since I have an older sister who resides in Georgia who was lobbying me to relocate to Georgia and believed relocating down here will be great for me. Originally had plans to relocate to Atlanta in the spring of 2020 and of course, my plans got delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Near the end of 2020 into the year 2021, I was just looking for jobs and opportunities to get me down to Atlanta. However, every job I applied for I would get a rejection email stating “Thank you for applying and expressing interest with us but unfortunately, we decide to go with other candidates” or emails just as similar. When I do get an interview from a company, then it will be with a recruiter and not with the hiring manager and we all know how that goes. At one point in time, I was questioning that will I ever have an opportunity to relocate to Atlanta with no job was giving me any opportunity. It resulted from me being severely depressed and would talk with my older sister at times who told me to be patient and God will tell you that you will be in Georgia when you least expect it.
The turning point for me was when my current manager now from the Atlanta Falcons who came across my profile and reached out to me via LinkedIn which my profile header at the time stated Looking for full-time opportunities in the Atlanta area. He messaged me randomly and said, ” Please send me your updated resume”. When I saw his message, I quickly sent him my resume and from there we set up a 15-minute conversation just to get to know each other and for me to learn more about an open position that he was looking to fill. From there I had a virtual interview the director of that position with the organization and they liked me enough to give me an opportunity to relocate to Atlanta work for the Atlanta Falcons. Been with the team for almost 5 months now and it has been the best organization I’ve ever worked for from the culture, my colleagues, and the impact on the community.
Since living in Atlanta, I build and made so many relationships that I believe it will last a lifetime. Reconnected with Christian Nelson who helped me get transitioned to Georgia and connect me with successful professionals in Atlanta. Christian also does music and go out to his shows to see him perform and help support his music including with Earl aka E-Dot who both made a popular single hit “We Outside”.
I attend to The Faith Center Church and helped serve the church from the events, hospitality, and parking team. Done several community services, worked the Black Sports Professionals Atlanta Chapter partner with Bright Futures of Atlanta help clean and redecorate the classroom for their students.
Volunteered with Hands-on Atlanta to help package foods for people in need and volunteered to help set up Hands-on Atlanta garden in the westside community.
I volunteered to coach the Westside Falcons Youth Flag Football League teaching the kids about the game of football and being a positive role model who want to see the kids be happy and succeed in life.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Struggles for me would be making the right connection for my network since I work for an amazing organization some people may attempt to used me to better themselves. Learning to see who is the right people to have in your personal network who have pure intentions.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
With my role with the Atlanta Falcons, I facilitate group outings with businesses and with people with want to attend a Falcons game. I mostly work with schools throughout the state of Georgia bringing schools out to Falcons game and help create fundraise initiatives to raiser money to schools by attending a Falcons game.
One of my biggest success in this role is that I facilitated a teachers appreciation promotion where teachers can attend a Falcons game on October 3 and 31 get a discounted ticket, Falcons lunch bag, and be honored on the video board.
That promotion went extremely well, I had teachers throughout the state of Georgia reached out to me via email or phone thanking me that the Falcons are honoring and recognizing them. Some teachers even told me that this is their first time ever coming out to an NFL game and will be cheering for the Falcons. Being part of this promotion was an honor for me especially seeing teachers happy and want to come out to future Falcons games and as well as create fundraising initiative with the team.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
It has been an amazing four-month here in Atlanta and look forward to many more to come. I would tell everyone is to get involved to professional organizations and to step out to networking events to meet new people. Have faith and serve in the community to have a lasting impact on others. Always stay humble and don’t take anything for granted.
