Today we’d like to introduce you to Urmi Hossain
Hi Urmi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My career in finance has been marked by continuous learning, determination, and passion.
In university, I wasn’t entirely sure what I wanted to study. I started with International Business as a major, but quickly switched to Finance. The moment I took my first finance class, it was like love at first sight. I genuinely enjoyed attending classes, writing exams, and listening to the lectures. Graduating from university was a bit upsetting, as I didn’t want that experience to end.
After graduation, I secured a full-time job in finance, and every step of my career since then has been fueled by learning and growth. One thing I’ve never stopped doing upon graduation is pursuing knowledge and professional development. I completed my CFA designation in 2023 and my CAIA designation in 2024. Throughout this journey, I’ve been lucky to have had mentors and friends who supported me and helped guide my career trajectory.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Working in the corporate world can certainly come with its surprises. No matter where we are in the industry, we all face a lot of uncertainty, especially with technology advancing and the world changing so quickly with new products being introduced.
There were times when my roles were outsourced to other parts of the world, and I was left searching for new opportunities. Other times, I struggled with job hunting and faced numerous rejections. But after all those rejections, I eventually landed in the place I had always wanted to be, doing exactly what I had studied for.
One thing I’ve learned through this journey is that bad times do pass, and we need to stay determined, focused on our goals, and build resilience along the way
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Outside of my 9-5 job, I dedicate my time to what I call my “5-9” where I focus on giving back to the community and supporting causes that are close to my heart.
I’m currently involved with Femme Influence, a non-profit organization based in South Africa. This organization is dedicated to giving back to less privileged communities, with a strong focus on educating girls and women.
So far, Femme Influence has done incredible work spreading awareness about clean hygiene, mental health, and empowering women.
This year, we plan to collaborate more with local organizations and increase awareness of the impactful work we’re doing. While our focus is on empowering girls and women, we also believe in involving men in the conversation and bringing them into these important discussions.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memories are the ones with my sister. Despite the five-year age gap between us, I’ve always felt the difference in both our ages and our generations. Even though we’re so different, we’ve always been each other’s strength and support.
When we were kids, we often fought over food, especially because I’d steal her chocolate, and we’d wrestle over silly things. But as we got older and I moved out, our bond grew even stronger. Now, we’re each other’s confidants and best friends. We love traveling together and exploring the world.
No matter how much time passes, we still fight sometimes, and I still steal her chocolate.
